Get Access To All JobsFront End Software Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a front end software engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, as long as your school's DSO confirms the work is directly tied to your program of study. Front end engineering roles in computer science, information systems, or software engineering programs typically qualify because the job duties map to coursework in web development, UI design, or software architecture. Your DSO makes the final determination, and your I-20 must reflect the authorization before you begin work.
Can I do CPT at a startup without a dedicated HR or immigration team?
Yes. CPT authorization is handled entirely on your school's side through your DSO, not by the employer. The employer just needs to provide an offer letter with the position title, start date, location, and hours. That said, startups without E-Verify enrollment may create complications if you later pursue OPT or H-1B visa sponsorship with that employer, so factor that into your evaluation.
What happens if my CPT job title changes from front end to full stack during the engagement?
A title or duties change that materially shifts the scope of work requires a new CPT authorization from your DSO. Continuing work under a changed role without an updated I-20 puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO promptly, get a revised offer letter from your employer, and request a new I-20 before the role change takes effect.
How do I find front end software engineer CPT jobs where employers understand F-1 requirements?
Migrate Mate filters roles by employers with documented work-authorization filing history, which identifies companies already experienced with F-1 and CPT onboarding. That matters because employers unfamiliar with CPT often stall offers while their HR team researches authorization requirements, eating into your available start window. Targeting experienced employers reduces that friction significantly.
Does O*NET classify front end software engineer as a specialty occupation?
O*NET groups front end software engineer work under the broader Software Developers and Software Quality Assurance Analysts occupational category, which carries a Job Zone 4 rating requiring significant preparation and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. That classification supports both CPT eligibility during your studies and the specialty occupation standard you'll need for H-1B or other work visa petitions after graduation.
