Get Access To All JobsPlatform Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a platform engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the work directly connects to your enrolled degree program, typically computer science, information systems, software engineering, or a related field. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your curriculum, not the job title. Roles involving cloud infrastructure, CI/CD pipelines, Kubernetes, or site reliability engineering usually satisfy the integral-part requirement for STEM-adjacent programs.
How do I find platform engineer employers who are familiar with CPT hiring?
Search Migrate Mate to identify employers with documented work-authorization hiring history in infrastructure and platform roles. Many employers list platform engineer positions without specifying CPT, so filtering by companies with prior F-1 or LCA filing activity in technology roles helps you target recruiters who already understand the authorization process.
Can I do CPT for a platform engineering role that is fully remote?
Yes, remote CPT is permitted, but your authorized location on the I-20 must match where you physically work. If you're working remotely from your university's state, the I-20 typically lists that address. If you relocate to work from a different state, notify your DSO before starting so your SEVIS record reflects the correct work location.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my employer changes my role from platform engineer to a different title mid-internship?
A significant change in job duties, not just the title, may require your DSO to re-evaluate and reauthorize CPT. If your responsibilities shift from infrastructure work to software development or a different function, contact your DSO immediately. Working outside the scope of your authorized CPT puts your F-1 status at risk, so a revised job description and updated I-20 are required before continuing.
Does the O*NET classification matter when a recruiter reviews my CPT documentation?
O*NET classifies Platform Engineer roles under computer occupations requiring a bachelor's degree or higher in a related technical field. Referencing the O*NET occupation code in your CPT authorization letter or offer documentation helps recruiters and HR teams confirm that the role meets the specialty-occupation standard, which matters if you pursue H-1B visa sponsorship after graduation.
