Does an Application Engineer job qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies if the role's duties, such as systems integration, technical troubleshooting, or solution deployment, align with coursework in your program. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific curriculum. Roles that are purely sales-oriented or lack a technical engineering component are less likely to be approved, even if the title matches.
Can I do full-time CPT as an Application Engineer and still use OPT later?
Only if your full-time CPT totals less than 12 months across your entire program. USCIS counts all authorized full-time CPT periods cumulatively. Once you hit 12 months, OPT eligibility is gone. Track your authorized dates carefully, and ask your DSO for a written total before accepting any full-time offer.
What documents does an employer need to verify my CPT work authorization?
Your employer will need your I-20 with the CPT authorization page endorsed by your DSO, which lists the employer name, authorized dates, and whether the work is part-time or full-time. Some employers also request your visa stamp and I-94 record for I-9 verification. The employer name on your I-20 must match the hiring entity exactly, not a parent company or staffing agency.
How do I find Application Engineer jobs where employers understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you search Application Engineer roles filtered by employers with documented work authorization experience, so you're not starting every conversation by explaining what CPT is. Focus on mid-size technology and industrial firms with LCA filing history in engineering occupations. These employers have internal processes for onboarding international students and are less likely to stall over documentation.
Does the Application Engineer role fall under a specific O*NET classification relevant to CPT?
Application Engineer maps most closely to O*NET's Applications Engineers and Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers occupational categories, depending on whether your role is hardware or software-focused. Your DSO may reference the O*NET profile when determining whether the job's listed tasks match your program's educational objectives. Using the correct O*NET code in your CPT request can accelerate DSO review.
