Does a Mobile Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your university offers coursework in mobile development, software engineering, or a related field and the role is listed as an integral part of that curriculum. Your DSO evaluates the connection between the specific job duties and your enrolled courses, not just your degree program. Roles focused on iOS, Android, Flutter, or React Native development typically qualify when coursework covers those technologies.
Can I do CPT for a contract or freelance mobile engineering position?
Some universities allow CPT for contract roles, but many require a traditional employment relationship with a named employer. Check your school's CPT policy before accepting a contract offer. If the position is through a staffing agency, your DSO will typically require documentation from both the agency and the end client to verify the work site and curriculum connection.
How do I find Mobile Engineer employers who already understand CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter for Mobile Engineer positions at employers with CPT authorization history, so you're targeting companies that have already worked with F-1 students. That familiarity with I-20 documentation and start-date constraints significantly reduces delays during the offer and onboarding process.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
One or more academic years of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, including STEM OPT. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't affect OPT eligibility regardless of duration. If you plan to use OPT or the 24-month STEM OPT extension after graduating, track your full-time CPT hours carefully across all authorized positions.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your DSO typically requires a signed offer letter on company letterhead stating your job title, duties, start and end dates, and whether the position is part-time or full-time. Some universities also require the employer's FEIN or E-Verify case number. For Mobile Engineer roles, listing specific technologies or platforms in the offer letter, such as Swift, Kotlin, or React Native, strengthens the curriculum connection your DSO needs to approve the request.
