Does a hospitality internship automatically qualify for CPT?
Not automatically. CPT requires that the position be an integral part of your degree program, meaning your school must offer academic credit for it or it must be required to complete your degree. A paid hotel internship that isn't connected to a specific course or program requirement won't qualify, regardless of the job title.
Can I work CPT at a hotel chain with multiple locations?
Yes, but your CPT authorization must list a specific employer and worksite address. If you rotate between properties or transfer mid-semester, your DSO needs to issue a new I-20 reflecting the updated location. Starting work at an unauthorized site before your DSO updates your authorization violates your F-1 status.
What hospitality roles are most commonly approved for CPT?
Roles directly tied to hospitality management coursework qualify most reliably: front office supervisor, food and beverage coordinator, event planning assistant, revenue management analyst, and hotel operations trainee. Roles with vague titles like 'team member' or 'associate' are harder to justify unless the offer letter details specific management-track duties matching your curriculum.
How do I find hospitality employers familiar with CPT hiring?
Search Migrate Mate to identify hospitality employers with documented work-authorization experience. Employers already enrolled in E-Verify and accustomed to international student hiring understand the I-20 authorization process and are far less likely to rescind offers when HR encounters unfamiliar paperwork.
Can I do CPT at a hospitality startup or independently owned hotel?
Yes, employer size doesn't affect CPT eligibility. What matters is that the employer is a legitimate U.S. business, has an EIN, and can provide an offer letter meeting your school's CPT documentation requirements. Smaller independent hotels are often willing to tailor the offer letter language your DSO needs, which larger chains with rigid HR templates sometimes won't do.
