CPT Restaurant Jobs
Restaurant jobs on CPT must connect directly to your program of study, hospitality management, culinary arts, food science, or a related field. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and your offer letter needs to describe how the role integrates with your curriculum. Part-time CPT (under 20 hours per week) keeps your full OPT eligibility intact after graduation.

Get Access To All JobsRestaurant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a restaurant job qualify for CPT if my degree is in hospitality management?
Yes, as long as the specific role connects to your program's learning objectives. A front-of-house management position or food and beverage operations role typically qualifies for hospitality management students. Your DSO will evaluate the offer letter against your curriculum, so the job description needs to name concrete skills your program covers, not just list general restaurant duties.
Can I work as a server or line cook on CPT, or does it have to be a management role?
CPT eligibility depends on curricular integration, not job title. A line cook role can qualify for a culinary arts student if it develops skills directly tied to coursework. A server role is harder to justify for most degree programs but may qualify if your program includes front-of-house service curriculum. Your DSO makes the final call based on how well the offer letter supports the connection.
How do I find restaurant employers who are comfortable hiring F-1 students on CPT?
Migrate Mate lets you filter restaurant and hospitality employers by their history of supporting international students and work visa filings. Many independent restaurants have no experience with CPT paperwork, so targeting multi-unit operators or hotel restaurant groups with established HR departments reduces the risk of a delayed or denied authorization. Ask directly whether the employer has hired CPT students before.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the restaurant changes my role or schedule after I start?
Any material change to your authorized position, including a significant shift in duties, a change from part-time to full-time hours, or a move to a different location, may require a new CPT authorization from your DSO. Working outside the terms of your current authorization puts your F-1 status at risk. Notify your DSO before accepting any role change and get an updated I-20 if required.
Does full-time CPT at a restaurant affect my OPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. USCIS counts cumulative full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, against your OPT eligibility. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across all authorized positions, you lose your OPT entirely. Part-time CPT under 20 hours per week does not count toward this threshold regardless of how many months you work.
