Does a Food Service Manager role qualify for CPT?
It qualifies if your degree program in hospitality management, foodservice administration, dietetics, or a related field explicitly requires practical industry experience. Your DSO reviews the job description against your curriculum to confirm the connection. Roles with operational management duties like scheduling, vendor oversight, and budget tracking align most cleanly with degree requirements.
Can I do CPT full time as a Food Service Manager?
Full-time CPT means 20 or more hours per week and is allowed, but any 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Many students opt for part-time CPT during the semester and full-time CPT only during summer or winter breaks to protect their post-graduation OPT. Your DSO can walk you through which structure fits your timeline.
How do I find employers who understand CPT for this role?
Migrate Mate lists Food Service Manager openings from employers with international hiring history, so you're not starting from scratch with companies unfamiliar with F-1 authorization. Contract dining companies that staff hospitals, universities, and corporate campuses tend to have the most experience with CPT and structured onboarding for students.
What does the employer actually have to do to hire me on CPT?
The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. Your school handles the authorization through your DSO, who updates your I-20. The employer's only obligation is to provide a compliant offer letter and complete the I-9 employment verification process once you start. That's a much lighter lift than H-1B visa sponsorship, which is why explaining this early helps move the conversation forward.
Does Food Service Manager experience on CPT count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
H-1B eligibility for Food Service Manager roles is fact-specific because USCIS evaluates whether the position requires a bachelor's degree in a directly related field. Roles with clear ties to hospitality management or institutional foodservice administration have a stronger case. Documenting your CPT experience with performance reviews, project records, and a detailed job description strengthens any future H-1B petition for a comparable role.
