Does a Customer Success Agent role qualify for CPT authorization?
It depends on how your DSO evaluates the connection to your curriculum. Degrees in business administration, marketing, information systems, and communications commonly support Customer Success CPT because the role involves client communication, CRM platforms, and service operations. Your DSO will look for a specific course or degree requirement that the job fulfills, not just a general fit with your field.
Can I do CPT at a startup or small company without an HR department?
Yes. CPT authorization is a school-side process, not an employer-side filing. Your employer doesn't submit anything to USCIS or DOL for CPT. They do need to provide a written offer letter and may need to complete E-Verify if they're enrolled. Smaller companies often lack immigration experience, so come prepared to explain what CPT is and what documentation you need from them.
How do I find Customer Success Agent jobs where employers understand CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to identify companies with LCA filing history in customer-facing or technical support roles. Employers who've filed LCAs with DOL have worked through work authorization paperwork before and are more likely to understand CPT timelines. That prior experience reduces the risk of an offer falling through over documentation confusion.
What happens to my OPT if I do full-time CPT as a Customer Success Agent?
If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose OPT eligibility entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, doesn't count against OPT at all. If you're weighing a full-time CPT offer, calculate your total CPT months carefully before accepting. USCIS tracks this through your I-20 history.
Can I switch employers mid-semester on CPT?
CPT authorization is employer-specific. If you change companies, you need a new CPT authorization on a new or amended I-20 before starting at the new employer. Your DSO must approve each employer separately. Working at an employer not listed on your I-20 is unauthorized employment, even if you're still within your authorized CPT period at the original company.
