CPT Server Jobs

Server roles qualify for CPT when your hospitality, tourism, or food service program lists practical work experience as a required component. Your DSO must authorize each position before you start, and the employer, hours, and dates must match your academic training plan exactly.

Server CPT: Frequently Asked Questions

Does a Server job qualify as CPT for a hospitality management student?

Yes, if your program's catalog or curriculum plan explicitly requires practical work experience in food and beverage service. The Server role must align with your declared major and coursework. Your DSO reviews the job description and confirms the academic connection before authorizing CPT on your I-20. A position at a hotel restaurant or resort dining outlet is typically easier to justify than a fast-casual counter role.

Can I work as a Server on CPT while taking a full course load?

You can, but your total weekly hours matter. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week and doesn't affect OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT at 20 or more hours per week counts against your OPT bank after 12 cumulative months. Most F-1 students in active semesters limit Server shifts to part-time CPT to protect their post-graduation OPT.

What documents does an employer need to hire me as a Server on CPT?

Bring your updated I-20 showing current CPT authorization, your F-1 visa stamp, your passport, and your I-94 arrival record. The employer uses these to complete Form I-9. CPT authorization on your I-20 alone satisfies the work authorization requirement, you don't need a separate EAD card. Some employers unfamiliar with CPT may ask for an EAD; clarify that CPT-authorized students don't receive one.

How do I find Server employers who understand F-1 CPT authorization?

Browse Server positions on Migrate Mate, where you can identify food service employers with prior experience hiring international students. Hotel groups and multi-unit restaurant operators tend to have HR departments that handle CPT paperwork regularly, unlike independent venues where the owner may be encountering F-1 authorization for the first time.

Does a Server job at a tipped establishment create any CPT complications?

No, tipped wages don't create CPT complications from a work authorization standpoint, but confirm the position's base wage through the OFLC Wage Search to understand prevailing wage levels for your area. Tip-dependent pay structures can also affect whether the role meets your program's training objectives, so discuss compensation expectations with your DSO when submitting your CPT request.
