Get Access To All JobsIT Asset Management CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an IT Asset Management internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your established curriculum. IT Asset Management aligns with information systems, supply chain technology, and IT management degree programs. Your DSO will verify the connection. Roles involving software license compliance, hardware inventory systems, or vendor contract management typically satisfy the curriculum integration requirement for qualifying programs.
Can I do CPT in IT Asset Management at a company that doesn't typically sponsor visas?
Yes. CPT doesn't require employer sponsorship the way H-1B visa does. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS. Your school authorizes CPT on your I-20, and the employer simply hires you under that authorization. The company does need to complete I-9 verification and may need to enroll in E-Verify depending on their contracts.
How do I find IT Asset Management employers who have hired F-1 CPT students before?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with LCA filing history, which signals companies already familiar with international student hiring. IT Asset Management roles appear frequently in technology, financial services, healthcare systems, and large enterprise environments. Targeting employers in those sectors increases the likelihood you're dealing with an HR team that understands CPT authorization documentation.
What happens if my CPT end date falls before the project wraps up?
You can't work past your authorized CPT end date. If the employer needs you longer, your DSO must issue a new I-20 with an extended CPT authorization before the current one expires. Plan for a two-week buffer when negotiating the end date with your employer, since DSO processing takes time and the request must be submitted in advance.
Does IT Asset Management CPT experience count toward OPT in the same field?
CPT experience doesn't count toward OPT eligibility, but it does count as practical experience in your field during OPT. If you complete CPT in IT Asset Management and later use OPT or STEM OPT, the documented experience strengthens your H-1B specialty occupation case, since IT Asset Management maps to computer and information systems roles under DOL's Standard Occupational Classification system.
