Our 12-week paid internship program offers firsthand experience and meaningful projects that have an impact on our business. Throughout the program, you’ll have the opportunity to work alongside industry professionals receiving mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities that will expose you to various aspects of our industry.
Build Connections By:
Working alongside our IT department team that serves our customers, employees, and partners across North America and Canada. Collaborating with other Gordon Food Service interns and employees in the following areas:
- Communications
- Finance
- Accounting
- Human Resources
- IT
- Marketing & Merchandising
- Supply Chain
- Revenue Management
Build a Career:
In the IT department by:
- Target Alignment: Focuses on helping the team streamline project coordination and documentation.
- Support the coordination of major infrastructure refreshes and large-scale site initiatives (such as the Shepherdsville, Imperial, or Green Oak projects).
- Work within Jira, specifically organization and prioritization.
- Assist with site/network documentation that we are lagging behind on due to high priority work taking precedence.
Build the Future by:
Being an intern at Gordon Food Service, North America's largest family-owned broadline food service distributor and working alongside our department:
- Attending unique networking opportunities in and outside the office.
- Engaging in our mentorship program.
- Shadowing jobs across the organization to explore your career path potential.
- Participating in Gordon Food Services’ community and stewardship efforts.
- Developing personal and professional skills through workshops about communication, LinkedIn, presenting, and more.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
Meet the following qualifications to be considered for our 2027 internship program:
- Currently enrolled in a university pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Network, Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or a related field.
- Must be authorized to work in the US.
- Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher.

Does an IT Support role qualify for CPT authorization?
IT Support roles qualify for CPT when the work is directly tied to your enrolled program, such as computer science, information technology, or information systems. Your DSO will require documentation showing how helpdesk, systems administration, or network support duties connect to specific courses or program outcomes before authorizing your I-20.
Can I do CPT for an IT Support internship while taking classes?
Yes, part-time CPT runs concurrently with coursework as long as you remain enrolled full-time. Many IT Support internships are structured as part-time placements precisely because students are still in class. Staying part-time also protects your OPT eligibility, since 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates it completely.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for CPT approval?
Your employer typically needs to provide a signed offer letter or internship agreement that specifies your job title, duties, work location, hours per week, and start and end dates. Some DSOs also require a training plan showing how the IT Support role connects to your academic program. Get this documentation before approaching your DSO.
How do I find IT Support employers who are comfortable hiring CPT students?

Employers already familiar with DOL and USCIS compliance processes are far more likely to support CPT students without friction than those encountering work authorization requirements for the first time.
Does CPT IT Support experience count toward STEM OPT or H-1B eligibility later?
CPT work experience is legitimate U.S. employment and strengthens your resume for STEM OPT and H-1B visa transitions. It doesn't directly affect your eligibility for those statuses, which depend on your degree field and employer sponsorship, but it demonstrates practical IT experience that makes H-1B sponsorship conversations with employers more credible.
