Does a Network Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the duties connect directly to your degree program. Roles involving network design, routing protocol implementation, security architecture, or infrastructure troubleshooting typically align with computer science, information systems, or electrical engineering curricula. Your DSO makes the final call based on your specific program requirements and the employer's offer letter.
Can I work as a Network Engineer on CPT while still enrolled full-time?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, is allowed while you maintain full-time enrollment. Full-time CPT requires you to be enrolled in a course that grants academic credit for the work. Your school determines whether a co-op or internship course satisfies that requirement for a Network Engineer placement.
How do I find Network Engineer employers who are open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you browse Network Engineer roles filtered by employers with work-authorization filing history, so you're not cold-applying to companies unfamiliar with F-1 requirements. Government contractors and mid-size IT infrastructure firms tend to run structured co-op programs that already account for CPT timelines and academic credit requirements.
What documentation do I need before starting a CPT Network Engineer role?
You need a CPT-authorized I-20 from your DSO showing the employer name, start date, and end date that matches your offer. You'll also need a valid passport and your current I-94. The employer completes I-9 verification using these documents. Don't begin work until your updated I-20 is in hand, even if you've signed the offer.
Does CPT experience as a Network Engineer count toward O*NET's experience requirements for future visa petitions?
CPT work experience is legitimate U.S. employment and counts toward the experience requirements listed in an O*NET occupation profile. For Network Engineers, O*NET classifies the role as requiring moderate-term on-the-job training or related experience. That CPT experience can support future H-1B visa or employer-sponsored green card petitions, so document your duties and hours carefully.
