CPT Data Platform Engineer Jobs
Data Platform Engineer roles involve designing and maintaining large-scale data infrastructure, which maps directly to graduate programs in computer science, data engineering, and information systems. CPT authorization requires your DSO to confirm the work is an integral part of your curriculum, so securing a role with clear technical responsibilities strengthens that case.

Job Description
The Platform Innovation Engineer (Early Career) is a hands-on engineering role focused on building, experimenting, and learning through real implementation at the intersection of data, AI, and modern cloud platforms.
This role supports and extends the work of the AI Architect and senior platform engineers by helping turn new ideas, emerging tools, and innovative approaches into working, testable solutions. The emphasis is on building and experimentation—prototyping capabilities, validating approaches, and helping evolve early concepts into practical, repeatable platform features that can be trusted and scaled.
This position is designed for someone early in their career who is curious, motivated, and excited by the idea of shaping how a modern, AI-enabled data platform evolves, while learning how innovation is communicated, aligned, and delivered within clearly defined platform guardrails that protect data, users, and the organization.
The Modern Data Platform includes Snowflake, Azure services, Matillion DPC, the Power Platform (Power BI, Fabric, Power Automate), and AI-enabled capabilities such as internal intelligence agents, automation, and Python-based service.
Job Responsibilities
Build and Experiment with AI-Enabled Capabilities
- Build and test prototypes that explore how AI and automation can enhance data access, analysis, and platform workflows
- Experiment with AI-assisted analytics, intelligent automation, or agent-style solutions under the guidance of the AI Architect
- Validate ideas through hands-on implementation in development and QA environments
- Help transform promising experiments into stable, reusable platform components that can be safely adopted by others
Contribute to Platform Innovation
- Assist in building tools, utilities, or services that improve how the platform is used, extended, and understood
- Support the integration of AI capabilities into existing data and reporting workflows
- Work across multiple technologies and layers rather than within a single tool or silo
- Document what you build so solutions are transparent, repeatable, and supportable
Build Within Platform and Data Guardrails
- Design and build solutions with awareness of data sensitivity, access controls, and platform boundaries
- Work within role-based access models, environments (development, QA, production), and approval flows that protect data and platform integrity
- Follow established development, testing, and deployment practices to ensure changes are traceable and auditable
- Recognize when data handling or access considerations may apply and escalate questions early
- Apply platform guardrails as a way to accelerate innovation by using clear, trusted paths to build and deploy
Communicate, Align, and Build Trust
- Communicate technical ideas, experimentation outcomes, and trade-offs clearly to senior engineers, leadership, and business stakeholders
- Translate complex technical concepts into practical implications for non-technical audiences
- Participate in conversations where priorities, risks, and feasibility are discussed with stakeholders outside engineering
- Explain not just what was built, but why it matters, how it works at a high level, and what guardrails were considered
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Data, Information Systems, or a related field
- Exposure to SQL, Python, or cloud, data, or automation tools
- Demonstrated curiosity and interest in AI-enabled systems or modern platforms
- Willingness to experiment, learn quickly, and iterate within defined boundaries
- Strong communication skills and comfort engaging with technical peers, leadership, and business stakeholders
Preferred:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Information Systems, or a related discipline
- Side projects, hackathons, or self-directed technical exploration
- Exposure to cloud platforms (Azure preferred)
- Interest in how access controls, data stewardship, and platform trust are designed into systems
- Curiosity about how AI can improve productivity without compromising data integrity

Get Access To All JobsData Platform Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Data Platform Engineer internship qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role is an integral part of your program of study and your DSO authorizes it. Data platform engineering work, covering tasks like building data pipelines, managing cloud storage systems, and orchestrating workflows, aligns clearly with graduate programs in computer science, data engineering, or information systems. Your offer letter must detail specific technical duties so your DSO can confirm the curriculum connection.
Can I work full-time as a Data Platform Engineer on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week by USCIS, is permitted but affects your OPT eligibility. Twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT entirely, including STEM OPT. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, does not count against OPT regardless of duration. Confirm the hours on your offer letter with your DSO before accepting a full-time role.
What technical skills make a CPT application stronger for this role?
DSOs look for a direct connection between your coursework and job duties. For data platform engineering, documented experience with distributed systems, cloud platforms such as AWS or Google Cloud, SQL and NoSQL databases, and workflow orchestration tools like Apache Airflow strengthens the curriculum link. Reference specific course titles and projects in your CPT request that match the technical scope of the role.
How do I find Data Platform Engineer employers familiar with CPT?
Search Migrate Mate to browse data platform engineering roles at employers with documented work authorization experience. Companies already enrolled in E-Verify and with prior F-1 hiring history tend to process CPT paperwork faster, since their HR teams understand the I-20 authorization step. Targeting those employers reduces the risk of offer rescissions caused by unfamiliarity with CPT timelines.
How does CPT as a Data Platform Engineer affect my future H-1B eligibility?
CPT itself does not affect H-1B eligibility, but the downstream OPT impact matters. If you exhaust full-time CPT beyond 12 months, you lose OPT, which is the primary bridge to H-1B sponsorship for most F-1 graduates. Keeping CPT part-time or completing it within one semester preserves your OPT and STEM OPT options, giving you up to three years of work authorization to pursue H-1B sponsorship through an employer.
