Get Access To All JobsAudit Specialist CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does an Audit Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if your accounting, finance, or business program includes audit-related coursework or a practicum requirement. Your DSO evaluates whether the specific duties, such as internal controls testing, financial statement review, or compliance auditing, constitute an integral part of your curriculum. A vague job title alone isn't enough; the offer letter must describe the actual audit tasks.
Can I do full-time CPT as an Audit Specialist without affecting my OPT?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, per USCIS regulations. Most F-1 students in audit roles structure CPT as part-time during the semester and shift to full-time only in summer or between terms to stay under that threshold. Confirm the cumulative count with your DSO before accepting any full-time offer.
What documents does an employer need to hire me on CPT for an audit role?
Your employer needs your CPT-authorized I-20 showing the specific employer name, your start and end dates, and confirmation that the work is part-time or full-time as agreed. They'll use this to complete your I-9. Some audit firms, especially those with federal clients, also request your SEVIS record number for internal compliance files.
How do I find Audit Specialist employers familiar with CPT hiring?
Use Migrate Mate to search for employers with Labor Condition Application filing history in accounting and auditing. Firms that have previously filed LCAs for international workers understand work-authorization documentation and are less likely to rescind offers when they learn you're on CPT. Regional accounting firms and internal audit teams at large corporations are common CPT placements.
Does CPT work as an Audit Specialist count toward CPA experience requirements?
In many states, yes. CPT-authorized work in a supervised audit or accounting environment can satisfy the practical experience hours required for CPA licensure, but requirements differ by state board. Confirm with your target state's board of accountancy that CPT employment under F-1 status counts as qualifying experience before relying on it for your CPA application timeline.
