Get Access To All JobsNetwork Technician CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Network Technician role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work directly relates to your field of study and your school approves it. Network Technician duties, including installing hardware, configuring switches and routers, and monitoring network performance, typically align with computer science, information technology, and networking programs. Your DSO makes the final eligibility determination based on how your specific job description maps to your curriculum.
Can I do CPT as a Network Technician at a managed service provider?
Yes, managed service providers are common CPT hosts for Network Technician students because the work spans client environments, giving you exposure to diverse network configurations. Confirm with your DSO that the client-site nature of the work still satisfies your program's academic objectives. Some schools require that CPT duties happen at a fixed worksite listed on your I-20, so clarify this before accepting an offer.
How do I find Network Technician employers open to CPT students?
Migrate Mate lets you search Network Technician roles and filter by employers with technology LCA filing history, which signals experience working with international candidates. Look for mid-size IT service companies and enterprise infrastructure teams, which tend to have structured onboarding for CPT students and defined project scopes you can use to satisfy your school's CPT documentation requirements.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Network Technician employer changes my role?
CPT authorization is tied to the specific role and employer listed on your I-20. If your employer reassigns you from network infrastructure work to unrelated duties, such as software testing or customer service, your CPT authorization may no longer cover your actual work. Contact your DSO immediately if your job responsibilities shift significantly, and request a revised CPT authorization if the new duties still connect to your program.
Does completing CPT as a Network Technician affect my OPT eligibility?
Part-time CPT, meaning under 20 hours per week, has no impact on your OPT eligibility regardless of how long you use it. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely, so track your cumulative hours carefully if you plan to use full-time CPT across multiple semesters. Your DSO can confirm your running total of authorized full-time CPT days at any point.
