CPT Technical Consultant Jobs
Technical Consultant roles on CPT sit at the intersection of systems analysis, client-facing problem-solving, and implementation work, all of which must tie directly to your degree program. Your DSO authorizes each CPT placement individually, so the job description needs to align with your major before you accept an offer.

Get Access To All JobsTechnical Consultant CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Technical Consultant role qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT eligibility depends on whether the work is an integral part of your established curriculum, not the job title itself. Technical Consultant roles typically qualify when your degree is in information systems, computer science, engineering, or a related field and the project work directly applies concepts from your coursework. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description and offer letter to your appointment.
Can I do CPT for a consulting firm that places me at a client site?
Yes, but your DSO authorization is tied to the employer of record, which is the consulting firm, not the end client. The firm must be the entity issuing your offer letter and your CPT EAD. If the client site changes mid-authorization period, notify your DSO immediately, since the location and scope of work are part of what was authorized.
How do I find Technical Consultant employers who understand CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces employers with a history of hiring F-1 students, which makes CPT conversations much easier. Consulting firms that regularly recruit from universities and are enrolled in E-Verify tend to have HR teams familiar with CPT documentation requirements, reducing the back-and-forth that can delay your start date.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the project timeline changes?
CPT is authorized for a specific employer, period, and scope. If the project extends beyond your authorized end date, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before continuing to work. Never work past your authorized end date, even by a day, since unauthorized work violates your F-1 status. Contact your DSO as soon as you know the timeline is shifting.
Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility later?
Full-time CPT for 12 months or more eliminates your eligibility for OPT, including the STEM OPT extension. Part-time CPT, defined as 20 hours or fewer per week, has no effect on OPT eligibility regardless of duration. If you're planning to use OPT after graduation, track your cumulative full-time CPT hours carefully and confirm the running total with your DSO each semester.
