Does IT Service Management work qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role directly relates to your enrolled degree program. Positions involving service desk operations, incident management, change management, or ITIL process work typically connect to IT, MIS, or computer science curricula. Your DSO makes the final determination, so bring the job description and map specific duties to your coursework when you request authorization.
Can I do CPT in an ITSM role while taking classes full time?
Yes, but part-time CPT, 20 hours per week or fewer, is the standard option during an active semester. Full-time CPT requires 21 or more hours per week and counts against your OPT eligibility: one full academic year of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT entirely. Most students in degree programs choose part-time CPT to preserve that post-graduation option.
How do I find ITSM employers who accept CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate, which filters job listings by work authorization type and surfaces employers with sponsorship history. When you reach out to employers directly, specify that you're authorized for CPT and provide a clear timeline for when your DSO can issue the updated I-20. Many ITSM hiring managers aren't familiar with CPT mechanics, so a one-paragraph explanation in your initial message reduces back-and-forth.
What documents do I need before starting an ITSM CPT job?
You need a signed offer letter with your start date and job title, your DSO's written CPT authorization, and an updated I-20 listing the CPT employer and authorized dates. USCIS requires your I-20 to reflect the CPT authorization before your first day of work. Starting before the I-20 is updated puts your F-1 status at risk, so don't rely on a verbal agreement from your DSO.
Does CPT in an ITSM role count toward H-1B specialty occupation experience?
Work performed on CPT can count as relevant work experience when an employer evaluates your H-1B visa petition later, but USCIS makes that determination at the time of filing. ITSM roles that involve technical analysis, IT governance, or systems administration are more likely to support a specialty occupation argument than general helpdesk or administrative duties. Keep documentation of your specific responsibilities and any projects you led.
