Get Access To All JobsIT Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does CPT work authorization cover full-time IT Engineer roles or only part-time internships?
CPT covers both part-time and full-time positions, but the distinction matters for your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT is defined as 20 or more hours per week, and 12 or more cumulative months of full-time CPT eliminates your post-graduation OPT eligibility entirely. Many F-1 students in IT programs use part-time CPT during semesters and reserve full-time CPT for summer to avoid that cutoff.
Can I do CPT at a startup or small tech company, or do I need a large employer?
There's no employer size requirement for CPT. What matters is that the position qualifies as an integral part of your curriculum and that your DSO agrees. Smaller IT employers often move faster on offer letters and are comfortable with CPT paperwork once you explain the process. Confirm E-Verify enrollment status during the offer stage regardless of company size.
What job duties should an IT Engineer CPT position include to satisfy my school's requirements?
Duties that map directly to your degree coursework are the standard. For IT Engineer roles, that typically means systems administration, network configuration, infrastructure management, or technical project support. Reference the O*NET occupation profile for IT Engineer when working with your DSO to demonstrate the connection between the role's listed tasks and your academic program's core competencies.
How do I find IT Engineer employers who already understand CPT authorization?
Searching Migrate Mate lets you filter for employers with documented work authorization filing history in IT roles, which signals familiarity with F-1 work authorization processes. During outreach, lead with a brief explanation of CPT and confirm that the recruiter can produce an offer letter meeting your DSO's specific documentation requirements before you invest significant time in the interview process.
Does my CPT authorization transfer if the employer changes my job title or department mid-internship?
No. CPT authorization is tied to the specific position, employer, and dates listed on your I-20. If your role changes materially, including a title change that shifts your duties away from your authorized job description, you need a new CPT authorization from your DSO before continuing to work. Notify your DSO immediately if your employer proposes any structural change to the role.
