HDR is seeking an Advanced Technology for Surface Transportation (ATST) & Funding Intern to help expand our services in the Midwest, with a focus on Missouri and Kansas. The position would report to the ATST (Advanced Technology for Surface Transportation) and Funding Section in Kansas City, Missouri.
The individual in this position supports all aspects of advanced technology projects that may include:
- Provide support on ITS and traffic management system projects, including planning, engineering, design, integration, deployment, operations and maintenance, and communications
- Automated, Connected, Electric, and Shared (ACES) vehicle projects and emerging technology projects
- Electric Vehicle (EV) infrastructure planning and siting
- Grant-writing assistance
- Geospatial analysis and mapping
Preferred Qualifications
Preference given to local candidates
- Analytical, organizational, interpersonal, and written communication skills
- Prefer 2 years completed toward degree with 3.0+ GPA
- Demonstrated knowledge of software packages related to field of study/industry
Required Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate Engineering program
- Attention to detail
- Possess strong problem-solving and communication skills
- Basic Microsoft Office skills

Does a Technology Specialist role qualify for CPT authorization?
CPT eligibility depends on whether the role is an integral part of your program of study, not the job title alone. A Technology Specialist position covering systems administration, network support, or IT project coordination typically qualifies for students enrolled in information technology, computer science, or related programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the job duties align with your specific curriculum.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Technology Specialist without affecting OPT?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of duration, does not affect OPT. Most F-1 students in Technology Specialist roles structure CPT as part-time during the academic year and switch to full-time only during breaks to preserve OPT for post-graduation work authorization.
What should the offer letter include for CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs an offer letter that specifies your employer's legal name and address, your job title, a description of your duties, your start and end dates, the number of hours per week, and confirmation that the work is paid. For Technology Specialist roles, the duty description should map to the technical competencies in your program so the DSO can document the academic connection in your authorization.
