What types of IT Technical Support jobs qualify for CPT?
Roles qualify when the duties directly connect to your degree program, such as help desk support, systems troubleshooting, network administration, or desktop support tied to a computer science, information systems, or engineering curriculum. Your DSO makes the final determination, but positions that appear in your academic internship catalog or carry course credit are the clearest fit. Remote roles with a U.S.-based employer also qualify if your school permits off-site CPT.
Can I work full-time in IT Technical Support on CPT?
Full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, is allowed but affects your OPT eligibility. If you accumulate 12 months or more of full-time CPT, you lose your OPT benefit entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, doesn't count against that limit regardless of how many semesters you use it. Most students doing co-ops or summer internships in IT support choose full-time, but confirm the tradeoff with your DSO before accepting.
Does my employer need to do anything special to hire me on CPT?
Your employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT since the authorization comes from your school, not a government agency. They do need to be enrolled in E-Verify to complete I-9 verification for F-1 employees at most institutions, and they'll need to provide a written offer letter detailing your role and hours so your DSO can issue the updated I-20. Some employers with no prior F-1 hire experience are unfamiliar with this process, so sending them your school's employer guide upfront saves time.
How do I find IT Technical Support employers that are comfortable hiring CPT students?
Search IT Technical Support roles on Migrate Mate, where you can identify employers with documented DOL Labor Condition Application activity, which signals experience hiring international students on work authorization. Employers who have sponsored H-1B visa or OPT workers before typically understand CPT requirements and are less likely to withdraw offers after learning about the authorization process.
What happens if my CPT job overlaps with a semester where I'm also taking classes?
CPT during an academic semester is common and permitted, but you must remain enrolled as a full-time student unless your program explicitly allows reduced course loads for co-op or internship terms. Your DSO will note the enrollment status on your I-20 authorization. IT support roles with flexible scheduling, such as remote help desk positions, are a practical fit for semester CPT since they can accommodate class conflicts more easily than rigid on-site schedules.
