Get Access To All JobsQA Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a QA Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your degree program and your school offers a course or practicum tied to it. Roles involving software testing, test automation, defect management, or quality assurance processes align well with computer science, software engineering, and information systems curricula. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific program requirements and the employer's job description.
Can I work as a QA Engineer on CPT before completing my first year of F-1 study?
No. F-1 students must complete one full academic year before becoming eligible for CPT. This is a USCIS requirement, not a school policy, so no DSO can waive it. If you receive a QA Engineer offer before your first year ends, the earliest your CPT authorization can begin is the first day after your one-year mark.
What documents does a QA Engineer CPT employer need from me?
Your employer needs your updated I-20 showing the CPT authorization on page two, with the correct employer name, start date, and end date listed. They also need your passport, F-1 visa stamp, and I-94 arrival record for I-9 verification. Some employers with E-Verify accounts will run your documents through the system on day one, which is standard practice and not a problem for F-1 CPT workers.
How do I find QA Engineer employers that understand F-1 CPT?
Search for employers with existing DOL Labor Condition Application filings for software quality or testing roles on Migrate Mate. Companies that have already navigated work authorization paperwork are significantly less likely to rescind offers when you present your CPT I-20. Avoid applying to employers advertising that they cannot provide any immigration support, as even CPT requires basic I-9 familiarity from the hiring team.
Does QA Engineer CPT count toward STEM OPT eligibility?
CPT itself doesn't directly qualify you for STEM OPT, but your degree does. If you graduate with a STEM-designated degree and your QA Engineer role falls under an eligible SOC code, such as Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers, you can apply for the 24-month STEM OPT extension after your initial 12-month OPT period. Confirm your program's STEM designation with your DSO before graduation.
