Get Access To All JobsQuality Assurance Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Quality Assurance Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, as long as the work directly relates to your enrolled degree program and your DSO authorizes it. A QA Engineer role in a CS, software engineering, or information systems program typically qualifies because test design, automation, and software validation are core curriculum topics. Your offer letter should describe duties that map to specific courses.
Can I do CPT as a QA Engineer at a startup with no prior sponsorship history?
CPT itself requires no employer sponsorship and no prior filing history. The employer doesn't file anything with USCIS for CPT. The authorization lives entirely on your I-20, issued by your DSO. If you're evaluating the startup for post-graduation H-1B visa sponsorship, check their LCA filing history on Migrate Mate to see whether they've sponsored similar technical roles before.
How does part-time versus full-time CPT affect my OPT later?
Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, has no effect on your OPT eligibility after graduation. Full-time CPT totaling 12 months or more eliminates your standard OPT eligibility entirely. If your QA internship runs full-time across multiple semesters, track your cumulative CPT hours carefully with your DSO to protect your OPT options.
What SOC code do QA Engineer roles fall under, and why does it matter?
Most Quality Assurance Engineer positions are classified under SOC 15-1253 (Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers) or 17-2112 (Industrial Engineers) depending on the industry. The SOC code determines which wage level applies under DOL prevailing wage rules and which O*NET job zone your role belongs to, both of which affect LCA filing and future H-1B eligibility.
Which employers hire QA Engineers on CPT and later sponsor H-1B?
Technology companies, financial services firms, healthcare software providers, and defense contractors all hire QA Engineers and have established sponsorship tracks for technical roles. Employers with active LCA filings for software testing or QA positions are the clearest signal of sponsorship capability. Browse verified CPT-eligible QA Engineer openings on Migrate Mate to filter by employers with documented filing history.
