Get Access To All JobsSoftware Test Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Test Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is an integral part of your curriculum and your DSO approves it. Roles involving test plan design, automated testing, or quality assurance processes typically map to coursework in software engineering, computer science, or information systems programs. Your DSO will assess the fit based on your specific program requirements and the job description you provide.
Can I do part-time CPT as a Software Test Engineer without affecting my OPT?
Yes. Part-time CPT is defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, and any amount of part-time CPT does not reduce your OPT eligibility. Only 12 or more months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT. If your test engineering role is part-time, you can complete it without any impact on your post-graduation work authorization.
What documentation does my employer need for CPT in a test engineering role?
Your DSO authorizes CPT, not USCIS, so there's no federal filing required from the employer. You'll need a formal offer letter stating your job title, duties, start date, and hours per week. Your DSO uses this to verify the role connects to your curriculum and to issue the CPT authorization on your I-20.
How do I find Software Test Engineer employers who are familiar with CPT?
Search Migrate Mate for Software Test Engineer roles and filter by employers with DOL Labor Condition Application filing history. Companies that have filed LCAs for testing or QA roles have already engaged with the specialty occupation framework and are generally more comfortable navigating F-1 work authorization requirements, including CPT.
Does CPT experience as a Software Test Engineer help with future H-1B sponsorship?
CPT experience strengthens your H-1B visa case by demonstrating hands-on work in a specialty occupation. Software Test Engineer roles align with the O*NET classification for Software Quality Assurance Analysts and Testers, which requires a related bachelor's degree. Employers who authorize CPT and later sponsor H-1B petitions can point to your demonstrated performance in the role as supporting evidence for the petition.
