Get Access To All JobsSoftware Quality Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Software Quality Engineer role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, provided your DSO confirms the work is an integral part of your enrolled curriculum. Software Quality Engineer duties, including test automation, defect tracking, and CI/CD pipeline validation, typically map to computer science and software engineering coursework. Bring the employer's written job description to your DSO appointment so the curricular connection is documented before your start date.
Can I do full-time CPT as a Software Quality Engineer without affecting my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT is allowed, but twelve months or more of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, defined by USCIS as 20 hours per week or fewer, doesn't count against that limit. If you plan to use OPT after graduation, coordinate your CPT hours carefully with your DSO before accepting a full-time Software Quality Engineer offer.
How do I find Software Quality Engineer employers who are familiar with CPT?
Start on Migrate Mate, which surfaces Software Quality Engineer roles at employers with documented work-authorization history. Beyond that, look for companies enrolled in E-Verify, since E-Verify participation reflects prior experience with F-1 authorization. Employers who have hired QA interns through university partnerships are often more comfortable with the CPT documentation process.
What documentation does my employer need to provide for CPT authorization?
Your employer needs to provide a written offer letter or internship agreement that specifies your job title, start and end dates, work location, hours per week, and a description of your responsibilities as a Software Quality Engineer. Your DSO uses this to confirm the integral-part requirement. Vague or incomplete documentation is the most common reason CPT authorization is delayed.
Does CPT experience as a Software Quality Engineer count toward H-1B specialty occupation requirements?
CPT work experience in a qualifying Software Quality Engineer role can support a specialty occupation claim in a future H-1B petition, particularly when the duties required and used a bachelor's-level body of knowledge in computer science or software engineering. Document your responsibilities, tools, and reporting structure during your CPT period. USCIS adjudicators review work history when evaluating specialty occupation for QA and testing roles.
