Get Access To All JobsFull Stack Application Development CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does full stack application development qualify as CPT work?
Yes, provided your school's curriculum includes coursework in software engineering, web development, or computer science that directly relates to the duties in your job offer. Your DSO evaluates the curricular connection individually. Roles involving front-end frameworks, back-end APIs, database design, or DevOps pipelines routinely satisfy the integral curriculum requirement at most universities.
Can I do CPT at a startup that hasn't sponsored visas before?
You can. CPT authorization doesn't require the employer to have any prior visa sponsorship history because no federal filing is required from the employer for CPT itself. Your DSO authorizes the work, not USCIS. The risk is post-graduation: startups with no LCA or H-1B visa filing history may struggle with future sponsorship. Browse employers on Migrate Mate to see which companies already have documented filing activity before committing.
What happens to my CPT authorization if the full stack role changes significantly mid-semester?
A material change in duties, hours, or employer location typically requires a new or amended CPT authorization from your DSO. Shifting from a front-end-only role to one that includes back-end architecture or DevOps responsibilities usually counts as a material change. Notify your DSO promptly and provide an updated offer letter reflecting the new scope.
How does working full-time on CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Any full-time CPT, defined as 20 or more hours per week, counts toward the 12-month threshold that eliminates OPT eligibility. If you accumulate 12 or more months of full-time CPT across your program, you lose access to post-completion OPT entirely. Part-time CPT, regardless of total duration, does not reduce your OPT eligibility.
Which SOC code applies to full stack application development for LCA and wage purposes?
Most full stack roles are classified under SOC code 15-1252 (Software Developers) or 15-1254 (Web Developers and Digital Interface Designers), depending on how heavily the position focuses on customer-facing web work. Confirm the applicable code with your employer before they file an LCA, since the SOC code determines the prevailing wage level. The O*NET occupation profile for each code lists the defining tasks to help you verify the match.
