Get Access To All JobsProduct Software Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Product Software Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, if the role involves software development work that is an integral part of your degree curriculum. Your DSO will verify that the job description connects to an enrolled course or required practicum. Roles that blend engineering with product management may require a clearer breakdown of technical duties to satisfy your school's CPT eligibility criteria.
Can I do CPT full time as a Product Software Engineer?
Full-time CPT (20 or more hours per week) is permitted but carries a significant trade-off: 12 months of full-time CPT eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, meaning under 20 hours per week, has no effect on OPT. Most F-1 students in software engineering roles choose part-time CPT or limit full-time CPT to stay under the 12-month threshold.
What should I look for in employers to find CPT-ready Product Software Engineer jobs?
Look for employers who have previously hired F-1 students or filed Labor Condition Applications for software engineering roles, which signals familiarity with international hiring. Migrate Mate filters companies by LCA filing history so you can identify employers who have sponsored engineers in the past, saving time compared to asking recruiters cold.
How specific does my job title need to be for CPT authorization?
Your CPT authorization is tied to your degree program, not a standardized job title. Your DSO will evaluate whether the role's actual duties, not just the title, align with your coursework. If your offer letter says Product Software Engineer but the duties are predominantly product strategy, your DSO may require a revised description from your employer before approving CPT.
Will my employer need to file anything with USCIS for my CPT?
No. CPT authorization is issued entirely by your school through your DSO and appears on your I-20. USCIS is not involved in CPT approval. Your employer will verify your work authorization through standard I-9 completion, and your updated I-20 along with your F-1 visa serves as the documentation. No government filing fee or petition is required.
