Does a Software Quality Assurance role qualify for CPT under any major?
CPT eligibility depends on your enrolled program, not the job title alone. QA roles most commonly qualify under computer science, information systems, software engineering, and computer information technology programs. Business information systems majors can sometimes qualify if the QA work involves process analysis or systems validation. Your DSO makes the final determination based on your specific curriculum requirements.
Can I do CPT for a QA role at a startup that hasn't hired F-1 students before?
Yes. There's no requirement for the employer to have prior F-1 experience. What matters is that the role is genuine, the employer can provide a written job description, and the duties connect to your coursework. Smaller employers may need more guidance on completing the offer letter in a format your DSO accepts, so give yourself extra lead time before your intended start date.
How do I find QA internships where the employer already understands F-1 CPT?
Migrate Mate surfaces QA roles from employers with documented F-1 authorization history, so you can prioritize companies that won't need hand-holding through the CPT process. Employers who've previously supported CPT or OPT students are less likely to withdraw offers once they see your start date depends on DSO approval.
Does working as a QA engineer on CPT affect my OPT eligibility later?
Part-time CPT totaling less than 12 months doesn't reduce your OPT eligibility. Full-time CPT of 12 months or more eliminates your OPT entirely, including the STEM OPT extension. If you're doing a year-long QA co-op, check your cumulative CPT hours carefully with your DSO before accepting. Most semester-based QA internships stay well under the 12-month threshold.
What should the job description say to satisfy my DSO for a QA CPT authorization?
Your DSO needs to see that the QA duties map directly to your program's learning objectives. Descriptions that reference test case design, defect lifecycle management, automation scripting, or software validation typically satisfy computer science and engineering DSOs. Generic descriptions like 'assist with testing' often get sent back for revision. Use the O*NET task list for this occupation as a drafting reference and have your academic advisor confirm the curriculum alignment before submitting.
