ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
What We're Looking For:
- Actively pursuing an Associate, Bachelor, or Master's degree in Engineering, Architecture, Building Science, or related degree
- Interest in building forensics, mechanical systems, and structures
- Position requires carrying 40 – 70 lbs multiple times a day or occasionally lifting 85 lbs to waist height
- Must be able to provide suitable transportation for use on job sites - mileage will be reimbursed

Does a Software Consultant role qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the work is integral to your degree program and your DSO approves it. Software Consultant duties, client needs analysis, architecture recommendations, and implementation oversight, align closely with computer science and information systems curricula. Bring the job description and a written offer letter to your DSO appointment and ask them to identify which enrolled courses the role satisfies.
Can I do CPT at a consulting firm that places me at client sites?
You can, but the placement structure matters for your CPT authorization and future visa sponsorship. Your employer of record is the consulting firm, not the client. Your I-20 should list the consulting firm's address. Confirm your DSO is aware of the third-party placement model, and ask the employer whether client-site work changes the job duties listed in your offer letter.
How do I find Software Consultant employers who support CPT students?

Does full-time CPT affect my OPT eligibility?
Full-time CPT used for 12 months or more eliminates your OPT eligibility entirely under SEVP rules. If your Software Consultant CPT authorization totals 12 full-time months across all employers, you won't have OPT available after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as fewer than 20 hours per week, doesn't count toward that 12-month limit regardless of how long you use it.
What should I do if my Software Consultant role changes scope mid-CPT?
Notify your DSO immediately if your duties shift significantly, for example, if you move from internal systems work to client-facing advisory projects. CPT authorization is tied to the specific role and employer on your I-20. A material change in job function may require an updated CPT authorization. Working outside your authorized scope puts your F-1 status at risk.
