Get Access To All JobsSecurity Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Security Engineer internship qualify for CPT authorization?
It qualifies only if the work is an integral part of your established curriculum. A security engineering role covering vulnerability assessment, network monitoring, or incident response will typically meet that standard for computer science, cybersecurity, or information systems programs. Your DSO makes the final determination based on how the position connects to your specific degree requirements, not the job title alone.
Can I do CPT at a company that requires a security clearance?
You can accept the offer and start the clearance process, but many clearances take months and are not guaranteed for F-1 students. Most employers who hire CPT students for security roles will assign unclassified work during the investigation period. Confirm with the hiring team what tasks you'll perform before your clearance is adjudicated so your CPT authorization reflects your actual duties.
How do I find Security Engineer employers that hire CPT students?
Search Migrate Mate to find employers with active LCA filing history for security engineering roles. Companies that have filed LCAs for these positions have already navigated DOL prevailing wage requirements, which means their HR and legal teams understand work authorization paperwork and are more likely to onboard CPT students without delays.
Does part-time CPT affect my full-time CPT eligibility after graduation?
Yes. Any full-time CPT authorization, meaning 20 or more hours per week, that totals 12 months or more will eliminate your OPT eligibility entirely. Part-time CPT, under 20 hours per week, doesn't count against OPT no matter how many semesters you use it. If you're targeting a full-time Security Engineer internship, confirm the authorized hours with your DSO before signing the offer.
What happens to my CPT authorization if my Security Engineer role shifts to remote work?
Your CPT authorization letter specifies the employer and work location. If the role shifts to fully remote or moves to a different site, your DSO may need to issue an updated I-20 reflecting the change. Don't assume your original authorization covers a location change. Notify your DSO as soon as your employer confirms the new work arrangement so your records stay accurate.
