Get Access To All JobsSenior Fullstack Software Engineer CPT: Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Senior Fullstack Software Engineer role qualify for CPT?
Yes, provided the role integrates directly with your enrolled coursework in areas like software engineering, systems design, or computer science. Your DSO evaluates the job description against your curriculum, not the job title. Roles combining frontend frameworks with backend APIs and database design typically align well with most CS or software engineering programs, but you must submit documentation showing that connection explicitly.
Can I do CPT at a startup or small tech company?
Yes. CPT has no employer-size requirement from USCIS or DOL. What matters is that the employer can provide a formal offer letter describing your responsibilities and that those responsibilities tie to your academic program. Smaller companies are often more flexible on project scope, which can make the curricular-connection argument easier to document for your DSO.
How do I find Senior Fullstack Software Engineer roles open to CPT students?
Use Migrate Mate to search for Senior Fullstack Software Engineer listings filtered by employers with work authorization filing history. Many postings don't specify CPT explicitly, so look for language like 'will consider F-1' or 'OPT/CPT accepted,' and follow up directly with the recruiter to confirm they can accommodate CPT start timelines, which depend on your school's authorization processing window.
What happens if the role requires both frontend and backend work under different SOC codes?
Your employer files the LCA under a single SOC code that best matches the primary duties. For Senior Fullstack Software Engineers, this is most often Software Developers (SOC 15-1252) or Software Quality Assurance Analysts depending on the company's interpretation. You can cross-reference the job description against O*NET occupation profiles to see which code fits the actual responsibilities before your offer stage.
Does full-time CPT in a senior engineering role affect my future H-1B path?
CPT itself doesn't affect H-1B eligibility, but twelve or more months of full-time CPT eliminates OPT, which is the most common bridge to H-1B sponsorship after graduation. If your senior role runs full-time for an academic year or longer, you'll need an employer willing to sponsor an H-1B directly from CPT status, which skips OPT entirely and requires the employer to file a cap-subject H-1B petition.
