Does a Specialty Cook job qualify for CPT authorization?
Yes, if the role is directly tied to your academic program. Culinary arts, hospitality management, and food science programs typically support CPT for Specialty Cook positions. Your DSO will review the job description against your curriculum to confirm the connection. Generic kitchen work that doesn't align with your coursework may not qualify, so get a detailed offer letter before submitting your CPT request.
Can I work in a restaurant or hotel kitchen on CPT?
You can work in any food service environment, including restaurants, hotel kitchens, catering operations, and institutional dining, as long as your school authorizes it and the employer is a legitimate U.S. business. The employer doesn't need to file anything with USCIS for CPT. Browse CPT-eligible Specialty Cook openings on Migrate Mate to find operations already familiar with hiring F-1 students.
What happens to my OPT if I use full-time CPT as a Specialty Cook?
Full-time CPT lasting 12 or more months makes you ineligible for OPT after graduation. Part-time CPT, defined as under 20 hours per week, doesn't affect OPT eligibility regardless of how long you use it. If you plan to use OPT for post-graduation employment, stay under 20 hours per week during each CPT authorization period and confirm the hours limit with your DSO.
Does my CPT employer need to sponsor me for a visa later?
CPT itself requires no visa sponsorship from the employer. You're working under your F-1 status, authorized by your school. If you want to stay with the same employer after graduation, they would need to sponsor you for a work visa such as H-1B visa or, for Australians, E-3 visa. Specialty Cook roles can qualify as specialty occupations if the position requires a directly related degree, but this depends on the specific job duties and employer documentation.
How far in advance should I apply for CPT authorization?
Most DSOs recommend submitting your CPT request at least two to four weeks before your intended start date, though timelines vary by school. You'll need a signed offer letter specifying the employer, job title, start and end dates, and weekly hours. Processing delays are common at the start of each semester, so submit early and avoid accepting a job offer before your updated I-20 reflects the CPT authorization.
