Data Analytics Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data analytics engineer in Virginia?
Data analytics engineering has no state-issued license in Virginia, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skills. Most Virginia employers expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, data science, statistics, or engineering, though some accept a related quantitative field. Building a portfolio of data pipeline or BI projects, earning cloud certifications from AWS or Google, and targeting Virginia's large government contracting or financial services firms gives candidates a clear competitive edge.
How much do data analytics engineers make in Virginia?
Data analytics engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $126,430 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,420 for the lowest 10% to over $207,890 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire data analytics engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring data analytics engineers in Virginia right now include Capital One, Information Technology Senior Management Forum, and TRAX International, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of September 2026. Virginia's concentration of defense contractors, federal agency partners, and regional bank headquarters means demand for data analytics engineers stays active well beyond the largest brand names.
Which Virginia cities have the most data analytics engineer jobs?
McLean, Arlington, and Richmond have the most data analytics engineer openings in Virginia. Northern Virginia leads because of its dense cluster of federal agencies, defense contractors, and technology firms, while Richmond draws from the financial services and insurance sectors, and smaller suburban corridors like Reston and Tysons Corner host major technology campuses that consistently post data engineering roles.
Are there remote data analytics engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, and more than most fields, since data analytics engineering is desk-based work that translates well to distributed teams. About 63% of data analytics engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of September 2026, reflecting how broadly this work can be done off-site. Pipeline development, SQL modeling, and BI dashboard work are the sub-functions most commonly offered with full remote flexibility.
How can I get hired as a data analytics engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a data analyst or junior data engineer role at a Virginia government contractor or financial services firm, then moving into full data analytics engineering once you have pipeline work on your record. Companies like Booz Allen Hamilton and Leidos run rotational analyst programs that place early-career candidates on data-intensive federal contracts. Building a public portfolio of dbt or Spark projects and earning a cloud associate certification strengthens an application significantly for Virginia employers reviewing candidates without direct experience.
Where can I find and apply to data analytics engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to data analytics engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings sourced from employers actively hiring in the state. Search the listings to find roles that match your experience and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that fit.
