Data Engineer Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data engineer in New York?
Data engineering has no state-issued license in New York, so the path runs through education and demonstrated technical skill. Employers in New York typically expect a bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, or mathematics, combined with hands-on experience in cloud platforms and pipeline tooling. Strong candidates build a portfolio of end-to-end pipeline projects, earn vendor certifications from AWS or Google Cloud, and target entry analyst or junior data engineering roles at New York's large financial institutions, hospital networks, or technology firms.
Which companies hire data engineers in New York?
Employers hiring data engineers in New York right now include Amazon, Capital One, and Bloomberg, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of global financial institutions, major media companies, and large healthcare systems means consistent year-round demand across industries, not just in technology-native firms.
Which New York cities have the most data engineer jobs?
New York, New York, and New York City account for the most data engineer openings in New York. New York City drives the majority of listings because of its density of financial services headquarters, advertising technology companies, and large hospital systems, while Albany and Buffalo generate steady demand through state agency data modernization programs and regional healthcare networks anchored by employers like Albany Med and Kaleida Health.
Are there remote data engineer jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 33% of data engineer openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting the desk-based, cloud-native nature of the work. Pipeline engineering, data modeling, and analytics platform roles are the most consistently remote, while positions that involve on-premises infrastructure or close collaboration with trading floors and clinical systems tend to require in-office presence.
How can I get hired as a data engineer in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a data analyst or analytics engineer role, which large New York employers use as a feeder into full pipeline engineering positions. JPMorgan Chase, Citi, and NYU Langone Health run formal technology analyst programs that accept recent graduates with no prior industry experience. Building a public portfolio on GitHub with demonstrated ETL and SQL projects, earning a cloud associate certification, and targeting these structured new-grad programs gives candidates without experience the strongest foothold in the New York market.
Where can I find and apply to data engineer jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to data engineer jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated in real time. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your skills and location, and apply directly to the employers posting them.
