INTRODUCTION
The primary role of DOB’s Forensic Engineering unit (FEU) is to ensure public safety across all five boroughs of New York City. The unit responds to referrals and emergencies involving complex engineering and construction problems with unsafe, collapsed, leaning, fire damaged, or otherwise structurally compromised buildings and structures, also addressing issues of egress, zoning, and occupancy. FEU provides the Agency with engineering competence for incidents, accidents, collapses, fires, weather events and building related fatalities and services DOB emergency responses and special engineering needs. With each referral, FEU prepares a report addressing the history of building construction, an assessment of recent building performance, as well as recommendations for action after the building has experienced a trauma. FEU reports may offer engineering explanations of the findings, analysis, problems, and solutions of an affected structure as well as conclusions and recommendations for external agencies and the DOB borough commissioners. Data Engineering Intern Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a data engineering intern in New York?
Data engineering intern roles in New York do not require a state-issued license or certification, so the path centers on education and demonstrated technical skill. Most candidates are enrolled in or have completed a degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field at institutions like NYU, Columbia, or CUNY. Building a portfolio of pipeline or data projects on GitHub, completing relevant coursework in distributed systems or cloud computing, and applying directly to New York's finance, media, and tech employers gives candidates the strongest foundation.
Which companies hire data engineering interns in New York?
Employers hiring data engineering interns in New York right now include Peloton Interactive, Interactive Brokers, and 1-800-FLOWERS.COM, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of major financial institutions and media companies means many of these employers run structured internship cohorts with defined project tracks and return-offer pipelines.
Which New York cities have the most data engineering intern jobs?
New York, Jericho, and Manhattan lead New York for data engineering intern openings. New York City dominates because of its density of financial services firms, advertising technology companies, and enterprise software offices that generate the highest intern hiring volume, while Buffalo and Albany contribute openings through healthcare systems, state government technology initiatives, and regional employers building out their data infrastructure.
Are there remote data engineering intern jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than most fields, since data engineering work is largely code- and cloud-based and does not require physical presence. About 35% of data engineering intern openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly distributed teams have become in this discipline. Pipeline development, data modeling, and cloud infrastructure tasks are the parts of the role most commonly performed fully remotely.
How can I get hired as a data engineering intern in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying to structured internship programs at large New York employers that hire candidates based on academic projects rather than prior work experience, including technology rotational programs at firms like Citigroup, Verizon, and NYU Langone Health. Building two or three end-to-end data pipeline projects in a public GitHub repository replaces a conventional work history for many hiring managers. Lateral entry from adjacent roles such as data analyst intern or business intelligence intern at the same company is also common in New York's financial and media sectors.
Where can I find and apply to data engineering intern jobs in New York?
You can find and apply to data engineering intern jobs in New York on Migrate Mate, which lists current New York openings updated regularly. Search the available roles, identify the ones that match your background and preferred location, and apply directly to each employer through the listing.
