Developer Jobs in Chicago: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a developer job in Chicago?
Focus your search on Chicago's Loop, West Loop, and Fulton Market districts, where fintech firms, major retailers, and enterprise software companies concentrate most of their engineering teams. Familiarity with cloud platforms, modern JavaScript frameworks, or data engineering tools gives candidates a clear edge here. Attending local meetups and tech events in River North can also surface openings before they hit the big boards.
Which companies hire developers in Chicago?
Chicago developer roles are posted by Deloitte, DRW, and Capgemini and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's employer mix is unusually broad, with large financial institutions, regional healthcare systems, major retailers, and a deep bench of growth-stage startups all maintaining in-house engineering teams.
Are there remote developer jobs in Chicago?
Yes, though availability depends heavily on the type of developer role. About 40% of developer openings tied to Chicago are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how desk-based the work tends to be. Full-stack, backend, and platform engineering roles see the highest share of remote and hybrid arrangements among Chicago postings.
How can I get a developer job in Chicago with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path in Chicago is targeting junior or associate developer roles at mid-size software product companies and regional financial firms in the Loop, which often hire recent graduates and career changers alongside experienced staff. Chicago's strong community college system and coding bootcamp scene produce candidates who land QA engineer and junior full-stack roles as a first step. Building a portfolio with at least two deployed projects and contributing to open-source work gets consistent attention from Chicago hiring managers at this level.
Which industries hire the most developers in Chicago?
Most developer openings in Chicago sit in Technology & Software, Investment & Asset Management, and Consulting & Professional Services, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Chicago's role as a national hub for financial services and commodities trading, combined with a large healthcare and insurance sector and a cluster of e-commerce and retail tech operations, creates consistent developer demand across those three areas in particular.
