Developer Relations Manager Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a developer relations manager in California?
The most direct path is transitioning from a software engineering or technical writing role into developer advocacy, then moving into management. California employers typically expect a technical degree and real coding experience alongside demonstrated community or content work. There is no state-issued license for this role, so building a public portfolio of talks, documentation contributions, or open-source involvement carries significant weight with California-based hiring teams, particularly those at platform and cloud companies.
How much do developer relations managers make in California?
Developer relations managers in California earn a median of about $167,980 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $97,800 for the lowest 10% to over $300,800 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire developer relations managers in California?
Employers hiring developer relations managers in California right now include NVIDIA and Aikido Security, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of enterprise software, AI infrastructure, and developer-tool companies means hiring activity is consistent across both large platform firms and well-funded startups in the Bay Area and Los Angeles.
Which California cities have the most developer relations manager jobs?
Santa Clara and San Francisco have the most developer relations manager openings in California. San Francisco and San Jose dominate because the Bay Area is home to the headquarters and major engineering offices of the country's largest platform, cloud, and AI companies, while Los Angeles draws hiring from its growing enterprise software and media-tech sectors.
Are there remote developer relations manager jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. Developer relations is inherently a communication and community-facing role that translates well to distributed work. About 6% of developer relations manager openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how normalized flexible arrangements have become at software and platform companies. The most fully remote openings tend to be in content strategy, technical evangelism, and community management rather than roles requiring frequent on-site team or partner collaboration.
How can I get hired as a developer relations manager in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a developer advocate or developer programs coordinator role, which California-based companies like Google, Salesforce, and Twilio hire into at an associate level. Building a visible portfolio of technical content, conference talks, or open-source contributions matters more than years of experience. Lateral moves from technical writing, software engineering, or community management are common starting points, and participating in Bay Area or Los Angeles developer meetups and hackathons can create direct referral pathways into these teams.
Where can I find and apply to developer relations manager jobs in California?
You can find and apply to developer relations manager jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across the state's major hiring markets. Find roles that fit your background and apply directly to each opening.
