Underwriting Specialist Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a underwriting specialist in California?
Most underwriting specialist roles in California require a California Department of Insurance license, typically a Property and Casualty or Life and Health license depending on the line of business. You apply through the California Department of Insurance, complete the required pre-licensing education, and pass the state exam. Most employers also expect a bachelor's degree in business, finance, or risk management, along with foundational experience in insurance operations or analysis.
How much do underwriting specialists make in California?
Underwriting specialists in California earn a median of about $95,320 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $65,070 for the lowest 10% to over $162,640 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire underwriting specialists in California?
Employers hiring underwriting specialists in California right now include Philadelphia Insurance Companies, AIG, and Allianz, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of October 2026. California's size and industry diversity mean openings appear across national carriers, regional insurers, and specialty market firms with offices in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Sacramento.
Which California cities have the most underwriting specialist jobs?
Roseville, Los Angeles, and San Francisco have the most underwriting specialist openings in California. Los Angeles leads because of its concentration of commercial insurers, real estate, and entertainment industry accounts, while San Francisco draws demand from tech and life sciences carriers, and Sacramento serves as a hub for state-regulated programs and regional insurance operations.
Are there remote underwriting specialist jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 80% of underwriting specialist openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of October 2026, reflecting the desk-based and analytical nature of the work. Commercial lines underwriting, personal lines review, and risk analysis roles are the most likely to offer flexible or fully remote arrangements.
How can I get hired as a underwriting specialist in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an underwriting assistant or insurance analyst role at a large California carrier such as Zurich, Chubb, or a regional insurer with training programs in Los Angeles or San Francisco. Many carriers run formal underwriting development programs that promote from within. Completing your California Department of Insurance pre-licensing coursework and earning a CPCU designation candidate status signals serious commitment and gives you a meaningful edge over other entry-level applicants.
