This role is onsite based in Palo Alto, CA. In this role you will be a critical cornerstone, driving the technical roadmaps for both our next-generation unmanned aircraft and global ground support systems. This is a high-impact position meant for a technical leader who thrives on end-to-end product ownership, from pioneering new concepts to mastering massive-scale production. Leveraging your deep hardware expertise and a holistic system view, you will navigate high-stakes trade-offs between hardware, firmware, and software. You will lead the efforts in conquering our most ambiguous power delivery challenges and set the standard for engineering excellence across the organization.
What You'll Do:
- Lead the system architecture definition for aircraft power systems, including motor inverters/ESCs, DC/DC converters, and battery chargers, optimizing for weight, efficiency, and thermal performance.
- Lead the system architecture definition for automated ground charging infrastructure, ensuring high reliability, grid compatibility, and safe, autonomous operation.
- Define the battery strategy for the company, encompassing battery cell selection, advanced BMS architecture, and battery pack design philosophy for the aircraft.
- Identify and validate key enabling technologies through research and rapid prototyping to increase flight endurance and reduce infrastructure costs.
- Act as the ultimate technical authority to troubleshoot and resolve complex, systemic power issues in the drone and ground systems.
- Establish testing strategies and standards for functional verification, fault tolerance, and long-term reliability for both flight and ground hardware.
- Partner with mechanical, embedded software, and GNC teams to optimize system-level performance and ensure seamless integration of power systems.
- Guide power systems through rigorous safety audits and regulatory certification processes for both aviation and ground electrical standards.
What You'll Need:
- 15+ years of experience architecting and delivering complex power electronics products in a high-volume production environment, with a proven track record of driving products from concept through mass production.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field, with a history of technical leadership equivalent to a Principal level.
- Deep technical expertise in the architecture and control of high-density power electronics (e.g., motor inverters, AC/DC and DC/DC converters) and advanced motor control techniques like FOC and sensorless control.
- Proven track record of leading the evaluation, design, and integration of advanced energy storage systems, battery packs, and Battery Management Systems (BMS).
- Expertise in defining system-level electrical architectures and communication protocols (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, I2C) for complex autonomous systems.
- Ability to define overall verification strategies and lead complex debugging efforts for high-power systems, leveraging advanced lab equipment and data analysis.
- Demonstrated experience using data analysis to drive architectural decisions and optimize system performance.
- Exceptional communication skills with a proven ability to influence executive leadership, mentor senior engineers, and align cross-functional teams around a technical vision.

Senior Power Systems Engineer Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior power systems engineer in California?
The standard path starts with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam and accumulating supervised experience to qualify for the Professional Engineer exam administered by the California Board for Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors, and Geologists. Most senior roles in California require an active PE license. Candidates strengthen their candidacy with experience on utility or grid projects and familiarity with CAISO interconnection processes and California energy codes.
How much do senior power systems engineers make in California?
Senior power systems engineers in California earn a median of about $144,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $81,840 for the lowest 10% to over $217,760 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior power systems engineers in California?
Employers hiring senior power systems engineers in California right now include Monolithic Power Systems, Arcadis, and Eaton, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's aggressive renewable energy mandates and ongoing grid hardening programs keep utility companies, independent power producers, and defense contractors hiring consistently across the state.
Which California cities have the most senior power systems engineer jobs?
San Jose, San Diego, and Santa Clara have the most senior power systems engineer openings in California. Los Angeles and San Diego draw heavily from defense contractors, aerospace firms, and large investor-owned utilities, while the Bay Area is anchored by energy technology companies, clean energy startups, and transmission planning teams at CAISO and PG&E.
Are there remote senior power systems engineer jobs in California?
Yes, but they're limited. Much of the work involves site assessments, substation design reviews, and hands-on commissioning that requires physical presence. About 12% of senior power systems engineer openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and those tend to be planning, modeling, or interconnection study roles where the core deliverable is an analytical output rather than on-site engineering.
How can I get hired as a senior power systems engineer in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is an associate or junior electrical engineer role at a California investor-owned utility like Pacific Gas & Electric or Southern California Edison, both of which run structured rotational engineering programs for new graduates. Completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam early signals commitment to the PE path California employers expect. Candidates from adjacent roles in power electronics, control systems, or electrical design can move laterally into power systems teams, especially at firms with distributed energy or battery storage projects.
Where can I find and apply to senior power systems engineer jobs in California?
You can find and apply to senior power systems engineer jobs in California on Migrate Mate, which lists current California openings across utilities, defense, clean energy, and engineering consulting firms. Find the roles that fit your experience and apply directly.
