Senior Power Systems Engineer Jobs in Texas: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a senior power systems engineer in Texas?
The standard path starts with a Bachelor of Science in electrical engineering, followed by gaining an Engineer in Training credential through the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered by the Texas Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors, and then earning a Professional Engineer license after accumulating the required years of supervised experience and passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Most employers treating the senior title seriously require an active PE license in Texas along with meaningful utility or industrial power systems experience.
How much do senior power systems engineers make in Texas?
Senior power systems engineers in Texas earn a median of about $129,450 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $76,120 for the lowest 10% to over $210,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire senior power systems engineers in Texas?
Employers hiring senior power systems engineers in Texas right now include DNV, Generac Power Systems, and Arcadis, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Texas's combination of ERCOT grid operations, large investor-owned utilities, and rapid renewable energy buildout creates steady engineering demand across both established utilities and independent power producers headquartered or operating in the state.
Which Texas cities have the most senior power systems engineer jobs?
Houston, Austin, and Dallas account for the largest concentration of senior power systems engineer openings in Texas. Houston leads because of its density of energy company headquarters and industrial infrastructure, Dallas attracts transmission and utility grid work tied to Oncor's service territory and corporate relocations, and Austin draws engineers working on grid integration and renewable interconnection projects connected to the state's fast-growing central region.
Are there remote senior power systems engineer jobs in Texas?
Yes, but they're limited. Power systems engineering frequently requires site visits, substation work, and coordination with utility operations teams that are difficult to do remotely. About 56% of senior power systems engineer openings tied to Texas are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, and the roles most suited to remote or hybrid arrangements tend to be planning-focused or modeling-heavy positions such as transmission planning, load flow studies, and system impact analyses.
How can I get hired as a senior power systems engineer in Texas with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry point is a new-graduate engineering role at a Texas investor-owned utility or independent power producer, where rotational programs at employers like Oncor and CenterPoint Energy move candidates through protection, planning, and operations before placing them on a defined engineering career track. Earning the Engineer in Training credential early and building familiarity with ERCOT market rules strengthens a candidate's application. Adjacent roles in electrical distribution design, power systems consulting, or relay testing also provide a credible foundation for moving into a senior power systems position within a few years.
Where can I find and apply to senior power systems engineer jobs in Texas?
You can find and apply to senior power systems engineer jobs in Texas on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings across the state. Find the roles that fit your background and apply directly.
