Director Of Program Management Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a director of program management in California?
Most directors of program management in California reach the role through a combination of a bachelor's degree in engineering, computer science, or business, followed by years of progressive program or project management experience. California employers strongly favor candidates holding a PMP credential from the Project Management Institute, and many large tech and defense firms in the state expect familiarity with Agile or SAFe frameworks. No California state license is required, but the PMP is the de facto industry standard credential that separates competitive candidates.
How much do director of program managements make in California?
Director of program managements in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire director of program managements in California?
Employers hiring director of program managements in California right now include University of California Berkeley, Adobe, and California State University, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's concentration of defense contractors, major tech platforms, and integrated health systems means demand for this role remains consistent across a broad range of large, established organizations throughout the state.
Which California cities have the most director of program management jobs?
The cities with the most director of program management openings in California are San Francisco, San Jose, and Los Angeles. The Bay Area leads because of its density of large technology companies and enterprise software headquarters, while Los Angeles and San Diego draw significant volume from defense and aerospace contractors such as Northrop Grumman, Boeing, and Raytheon, which maintain major program offices in Southern California.
Are there remote director of program management jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most senior roles, because program management at the director level is heavily meeting-driven and strategic rather than tied to a physical site. About 22% of director of program management openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how broadly California's technology sector has normalized distributed leadership. The most remote-friendly sub-areas are product operations and digital transformation programs, while defense and government-contracted programs almost always require on-site presence due to clearance requirements.
How can I get hired as a director of program management in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through a program coordinator or junior project manager role at a large California employer, then building toward a PMP credential while accumulating cross-functional project ownership. Technology companies in the Bay Area and enterprise health systems such as Kaiser Permanente and Sutter Health run structured rotational or associate program management tracks that accept candidates transitioning from adjacent roles such as business analyst, operations manager, or product owner. Earning a PMP or completing a recognized Agile certification significantly strengthens a candidacy at this level.
