Project Consultant Jobs in California: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project consultant in California?
Most California employers expect a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, information systems, or a related discipline as the baseline. From there, earning a Project Management Professional credential through PMI is the most recognized accelerator for career progression in California's consulting market. Large California clients in tech, healthcare, and government frequently list PMP as a requirement, and California's dense concentration of management consulting firms means that credential carries real weight in the hiring process.
How much do project consultants make in California?
Project consultants in California earn a median of about $120,910 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $69,180 for the lowest 10% to over $188,560 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project consultants in California?
Employers hiring project consultants in California right now include Alvarez & Marsal, BKF Engineers, and Kennedy/Jenks Consultants, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. California's size and industry diversity mean hiring is spread across management consulting firms, technology companies, healthcare systems, and state and local government agencies, giving project consultants an unusually wide range of client environments to work in.
Which California cities have the most project consultant jobs?
San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego account for the most project consultant openings in California. The San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles drive the bulk of demand through their dense concentrations of technology firms, entertainment and media companies, and the regional headquarters of national consulting firms, while San Diego's strong biotech, defense, and healthcare sectors sustain a consistent pipeline of project consultant roles independent of the two larger metros.
Are there remote project consultant jobs in California?
Yes, and more than most fields. About 36% of project consultant openings tied to California are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves analysis, stakeholder communication, and documentation rather than on-site presence. Strategy and technology consulting engagements tend to offer the most flexibility, while implementation-heavy or regulated-industry roles in construction, healthcare operations, or government programs more often require on-site or hybrid schedules.
How can I get hired as a project consultant in California with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is through an associate consultant or junior analyst program at one of the large consulting firms with California offices, such as Deloitte, Accenture, or KPMG, which run structured new-graduate cohorts each year. Candidates coming from adjacent roles like business analyst, project coordinator, or operations associate at California tech or healthcare firms also make the transition regularly. Completing a PMP exam prep course and building a portfolio of any project work, even academic or volunteer-based, gives early-career applicants a concrete differentiator in California's competitive market.
Where can I find and apply to project consultant jobs in California?
