Project Consultant Jobs in New York: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a project consultant in New York?
Most project consultant roles in New York require a bachelor's degree in business, engineering, information technology, or a related discipline. New York does not issue a state license specifically for project consultants, but the Project Management Professional credential issued by the Project Management Institute is widely treated as the professional standard by New York employers. Many firms also look for an MBA or a relevant master's degree for senior roles, particularly in financial services and healthcare consulting.
How much do project consultants make in New York?
Project consultants in New York earn a median of about $121,040 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $74,580 for the lowest 10% to over $192,160 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire project consultants in New York?
Employers hiring project consultants in New York right now include EY, Alvarez & Marsal, and Capgemini, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. New York's concentration of global consulting firms, major financial institutions, and large hospital systems means demand stays broad and consistent across industries.
Which New York cities have the most project consultant jobs?
New York, Atlanta, and Albany have the most project consultant openings in New York. New York City dominates because it is home to the U.S. headquarters of major consulting firms and global banks, while Albany draws demand from state government and public-sector modernization projects, and Buffalo has grown as regional healthcare networks and infrastructure initiatives expand their project management teams.
Are there remote project consultant jobs in New York?
Yes, and more than many comparable roles. About 38% of project consultant openings tied to New York are remote or hybrid as of June 2026, reflecting how much of the work involves planning, analysis, stakeholder reporting, and documentation that does not require a physical presence. Strategy and digital transformation engagements tend to offer the most flexibility, while on-site construction or facilities-related consulting remains largely in-person.
How can I get hired as a project consultant in New York with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is securing an associate consultant or project coordinator role at one of the large consulting firms with New York offices, such as Deloitte, Accenture, or McKinsey, which run structured analyst programs for recent graduates. Candidates transitioning from roles like business analyst, operations coordinator, or client services associate often move into project consulting without prior consulting titles. Completing a CAPM certification and building a portfolio of even small-scale project work strengthens a candidacy considerably in New York's competitive market.
