This role is part of the Expedia Legal and Corporate Affairs (ELCA) team based in Seattle – a globally oriented legal team that is proactive, collaborative, and highly respected, where you will work closely with internal clients in an exciting and challenging environment.
In this role, you will:
- Perform legal research and analysis on U.S. state and local tax issues, with primary focus on indirect taxes and related corporate income, franchise, and withholding taxes.
- Monitor and interpret state and local legislation, regulations, administrative guidance, and case law, and provide practical, business-focused advice on their application to Expedia Group’s businesses and products.
- Partner with the Tax and Government Affairs teams on tax policy initiatives, proposed tax legislation, rulemakings, and other advocacy or engagement with tax authorities and trade associations.
- Provide legal advice and strategy for tax audits and examinations, including risk assessments, response strategies, and resolution approaches.
- Assist with tax litigation and administrative controversies and oversee outside counsel in state and local tax matters, ensuring efficient, high quality work product.
- Review and advise on tax provisions in external contracts (including customer, supplier, and partner agreements) to align with Expedia Group’s tax positions and operational practices.
- Support tax due diligence and related structuring on company transactions and acquisitions, including assessment of historic state and local tax exposure and anticipated future state tax footprint.
- Evaluate existing policies and controls and help develop and implement policies, processes, and documentation that support and substantiate the company’s state and local tax positions.
- Collaborate closely with colleagues in Tax, Finance, ELCA, Government Affairs, Product, and Operations to ensure tax considerations are appropriately integrated into business initiatives, product offerings, and systems.
- Provide clear, concise, and timely written and oral guidance that translates complex state and local tax concepts for a variety of legal and non-legal audiences, including senior leaders.
Experience and Qualifications
- J.D. degree and membership in good standing in at least one U.S. state bar (Washington preferred).
- Ten-plus years of legal experience practicing tax law, with a strong focus on U.S. state and local taxes (including significant experience with indirect taxes); experience with Canada and Mexico taxes a plus.
- Meaningful experience counseling on issues such as nexus, taxability, sourcing, marketplace and platform regimes, digital/online travel services, and state income/franchise apportionment, ideally in a technology, e-commerce, or travel-related environment.
- Demonstrated experience advising on and managing state and local tax audits, administrative appeals, and/or litigation, including strategy, negotiations, and interaction with tax authorities.
- Excellent analytical skills and the ability to communicate complex tax concepts directly and clearly to a variety of audiences, including non-tax stakeholders and senior executives.
- Exceptionally strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple, competing priorities in a fast-paced environment while delivering high-quality, business-oriented advice.
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills, sound judgment, strong interpersonal skills, and a collaborative work ethic; comfortable working across time zones and functions.
- Ability to work both independently and as an effective, solutions-oriented partner with colleagues and business clients.
- Common sense, great judgment, intellectual curiosity, and a practical, risk-balanced approach to problem solving.
- A strong work ethic with a bias to action and a genuine interest in Expedia Group’s mission and products.

Get Access To All JobsTips for Finding E-3 Visa Sponsorship as a Legal Director
Translate your Australian legal credentials first
U.S. employers need to verify your qualifications meet specialty occupation standards. Have your LLB or JD equivalency documented before applying, and be ready to explain how Australian common law training maps to U.S. legal practice areas.
Target in-house legal teams at multinationals
Companies with existing international operations are more familiar with E-3 sponsorship mechanics. Focus on General Counsel offices at ASX-cross-listed firms or U.S. companies with Australian subsidiaries, where your dual-jurisdiction background has direct commercial value.
Search verified E-3 sponsoring employers on Migrate Mate
Use Migrate Mate to find Legal Director roles at employers with active E-3 and LCA filing history. Filtering by sponsorship track record saves time and surfaces companies where the offer-to-visa process is already understood internally.
Clarify the LCA prevailing wage before negotiating
Your employer must file an LCA with DOL certifying your offered wage meets the prevailing wage for Legal Directors in that metro area. Knowing the DOL wage level before negotiations means your offer won't need renegotiation to satisfy the LCA requirement.
Use Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service for the paperwork
Once you have an offer, Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service manages the LCA submission, DS-160, and consulate preparation end-to-end. Legal Director roles often involve complex employment structures that need accurate LCA documentation from the start.
Prepare for nonimmigrant intent questions at the consulate
E-3 consular officers routinely ask senior legal hires about long-term plans given the seniority of the role. Have clear, consistent answers about your U.S. engagement scope and any ongoing Australian ties ready before your Sydney, Melbourne, or Perth appointment.

Find Legal Director JobsLegal Director E-3 Visa: Frequently Asked Questions
How do I find Legal Director jobs with E-3 visa sponsorship?
Migrate Mate is the most direct way to search Legal Director roles at employers with confirmed E-3 sponsorship history. Many senior legal roles are never publicly advertised with visa details, so filtering by LCA filing activity helps you identify employers already set up to sponsor Australian candidates rather than educating them from scratch.
How much does it cost to get an E-3 visa?
Migrate Mate's E-3 filing service covers the entire process for $499, including the Labor Condition Application, visa document preparation, and consulate appointment guidance. Traditional immigration lawyers charge $2,000–$5,000+ for the same work. The E-3 has less paperwork than most work visas, so paying thousands for legal help is usually unnecessary.
Does a Legal Director role qualify as a specialty occupation for the E-3?
Yes. Legal Director positions require a law degree as a standard minimum, which satisfies the DOL's specialty occupation definition. The role must normally require at least a bachelor's degree in a specific field, and legal practice meets that threshold. Roles with titles like General Counsel or Deputy Legal Counsel are evaluated the same way.
How does the E-3 compare to the H-1B for Legal Director roles?
The E-3 is significantly more practical for Australian lawyers. There's no annual lottery, no cap, and no waiting period tied to registration cycles. H-1B requires entering a randomised lottery with roughly a 25% selection rate in recent years. E-3 applications are processed directly at the Australian consulate, so a qualified offer can move from LCA filing to visa issuance in a matter of weeks.
Can I switch employers while working in the U.S. on an E-3 as a Legal Director?
Yes, but your new employer must file a fresh LCA with DOL and you'll need a new E-3 visa or an amended status before starting the new role. You can't port your existing E-3 to a different employer the way some other visa categories allow. Starting the LCA process early after accepting a new offer avoids gaps in your work authorisation.
