Tips for Your Economist Job Search
Tailor your resume to the sector
Government economist roles weight policy relevance and regulatory experience, while private-sector postings prioritize modeling skills and business impact. Adjust your bullet points for each application so your most relevant work is front and center, not buried.
Lead with your econometric toolkit
Hiring managers scan for specific software before reading anything else. Name R, Stata, Python, or SAS explicitly in your skills section, and call out the methods you've used, such as regression discontinuity, panel data, or time-series forecasting, by name.
Apply early to roles that fit
Migrate Mate lists economist openings from across the United States in one place, so you can find roles that match and apply directly to each listing.
Sharpen your writing sample strategy
Many economist roles require a writing sample alongside your resume. Choose a policy memo, research brief, or applied analysis that matches the employer's domain. A labor-economics sample won't land as well at a central bank focused on monetary policy.
Prepare a case-style take-home exercise
Federal agencies and consultancies increasingly use data exercises to screen candidates. Practice cleaning a messy dataset, running a quick regression, and presenting findings in plain language under a realistic time constraint before you reach that stage.
Negotiate using published pay scales
Federal economist positions follow General Schedule pay bands, which are publicly listed. Knowing your GS grade range before negotiating gives you a concrete anchor that private employers and agencies alike expect you to reference confidently.
Economist Jobs: Frequently Asked Questions
Which companies are hiring the most economists?
The companies hiring the most economists right now include Amazon, Navan, and JPMorganChase, with the largest share of openings in California, Washington, and New York, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of June 2026. Demand is especially strong in financial services, federal agencies, and economic consulting firms.
How many economist jobs are remote?
About 18% of economist openings are fully remote or hybrid as of June 2026, making it one of the more flexible professional roles. Research economist and policy analyst positions at think tanks and tech companies tend to offer the most remote flexibility, while roles at federal agencies and regional Federal Reserve banks are more likely to require on-site work.
How do you become an economist?
Most economist roles require at least a master's degree in economics or a related quantitative field, with federal government and academic positions often expecting a doctorate. Build proficiency in econometric software like Stata, R, or Python, and gain applied experience through internships, research assistantships, or thesis projects that involve real data analysis. A strong writing sample demonstrating your ability to communicate findings clearly is essential for most applications.
Can you get hired as an economist with little experience?
Entry-level economist roles do exist, particularly as research analysts or junior economists at consulting firms, government agencies, and financial institutions. Employers at this level look for demonstrated quantitative skills over prior work history. A thesis or capstone project, a published working paper, or a policy brief produced during graduate study all serve as credible substitutes for professional experience when applying.
What does the economist interview process look like?
Most economist interviews involve multiple rounds, starting with a phone or video screen focused on your background and research experience. A take-home data exercise or technical assessment typically follows, asking you to clean data, run a model, and present results. Final rounds usually include a presentation of your past research, behavioral questions, and a conversation with senior staff about how your expertise fits the team's current projects.
Where can I find and apply to economist jobs?
You can find and apply to economist jobs on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings from employers across the United States. Search the listings to find roles that match your specialization and experience level, then apply directly to each one that fits.
