Education Counselor Jobs in North Dakota: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a education counselor in North Dakota?
To become a licensed school counselor in North Dakota, you must earn a master's degree in school counseling or a related field and obtain a School Counselor license through the North Dakota Education Standards and Practices Board. The process includes completing an approved counselor preparation program, fulfilling supervised practicum hours, and passing required assessments. Counselors at postsecondary institutions typically need a master's degree but may not require state licensure beyond the K-12 credential.
Which companies hire education counselors in North Dakota?
Companies currently hiring education counselors in North Dakota include US Department of Veterans Affairs, Venesco, and City of Fargo, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. North Dakota's public school districts and its flagship universities remain the most consistent sources of ongoing education counselor openings across the state.
Which North Dakota cities have the most education counselor jobs?
Fargo, Minot, and Grand Forks have the most education counselor openings in North Dakota. Fargo leads due to its concentration of K-12 districts and proximity to North Dakota State University, while Bismarck draws demand as the state capital and home to major administrative and policy-facing education roles, and Grand Forks benefits from the University of North Dakota anchoring consistent postsecondary counseling needs.
Are there remote education counselor jobs in North Dakota?
Yes, but they are rare. Education counseling is primarily an in-person role that involves direct student interaction, crisis response, and on-site collaboration with faculty and families. About 21% of education counselor openings tied to North Dakota are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to involve administrative advising, virtual college access coaching, or state-level program coordination rather than school-based counseling.
How can I get hired as a education counselor in North Dakota with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is to apply for graduate assistantships or practicum placements embedded within North Dakota State University's or the University of North Dakota's counselor education programs, which give candidates supervised hours counted toward licensure. Many North Dakota K-12 districts also hire school counselor interns or provisional license holders who are completing their degree. Candidates coming from adjacent roles such as school social worker, academic advisor, or student affairs coordinator are frequently considered for junior counseling positions, and holding a provisional credential from the Education Standards and Practices Board strengthens any application.
