Electrical Design Engineer Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical design engineer in Montana?
The concrete path in Montana starts with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, followed by earning your Professional Engineer license through the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Land Surveyors. You first pass the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulate supervised experience, then pass the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Montana does recognize licenses from other states through reciprocity, which accelerates the process for engineers already licensed elsewhere.
How much do electrical design engineers make in Montana?
Electrical design engineers in Montana earn a median of about $87,360 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,910 for the lowest 10% to over $133,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical design engineers in Montana?
Employers hiring electrical design engineers in Montana right now include WSP, HDR, and Jobot, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's energy and resource extraction industries are the most consistent sources of full-time electrical design engineering roles in the state.
Which Montana cities have the most electrical design engineer jobs?
Billings, Missoula, and Bozeman account for the most electrical design engineer openings in Montana. Billings anchors the largest concentration thanks to its role as the state's commercial and energy hub, while Missoula draws openings from university-linked projects and regional utilities, and Great Falls benefits from proximity to major transmission infrastructure and industrial facilities.
Are there remote electrical design engineer jobs in Montana?
Yes, though they represent a minority of openings, since electrical design engineering regularly requires on-site coordination, equipment review, and field verification. About 9% of electrical design engineer openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, and those positions tend to cover the drafting, modeling, and specification-writing phases of a project rather than commissioning or site work.
How can I get hired as a electrical design engineer in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate engineer role at a Montana utility or engineering consultancy, where you work toward your Professional Engineer license under a licensed supervisor. NorthWestern Energy and regional engineering firms in Billings and Missoula regularly bring on EIT-designated engineers for that supervised experience period. A strong senior capstone project, relevant coursework in power systems, and an active Fundamentals of Engineering certification all give candidates a measurable edge when applying without prior industry experience.
Where can I find and apply to electrical design engineer jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to electrical design engineer jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings from employers actively hiring right now. Search the roles that fit your experience level and specialization, then apply directly to the ones that match.
