Electrical Design Engineer Jobs in Virginia: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical design engineer in Virginia?
The standard path in Virginia begins with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from an ABET-accredited program, followed by passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam administered through the Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation. After accumulating qualifying work experience, candidates may pursue licensure as a Professional Engineer through the same board. A PE license is not required for every role, but it is a meaningful credential for advancement into lead or project-engineer positions across Virginia's defense, utilities, and consulting sectors.
How much do electrical design engineers make in Virginia?
Electrical design engineers in Virginia earn a median of about $119,030 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $80,320 for the lowest 10% to over $173,400 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical design engineers in Virginia?
Employers hiring electrical design engineers in Virginia right now include Amazon, Axon, and Qualdoc, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of August 2026. Virginia's mix of defense primes, electric utilities, and federal systems integrators means consistent hiring across a wider range of employer types than most states.
Which Virginia cities have the most electrical design engineer jobs?
The cities with the most electrical design engineer openings in Virginia are Herndon, Arlington, and Sterling. Northern Virginia's concentration of defense contractors and federal agencies drives the largest share of postings, while Hampton Roads reflects steady demand from naval shipbuilding and military installations, and Richmond draws hiring through Dominion Energy and regional consulting engineering firms.
Are there remote electrical design engineer jobs in Virginia?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical or software-focused roles, since electrical design often involves site coordination, lab work, or hardware review. About 14% of electrical design engineer openings tied to Virginia are remote or hybrid as of August 2026, with hybrid schedules more typical than fully remote. Work that is most likely to carry a remote or hybrid option includes schematic drafting, specification writing, and design review for projects that don't require on-site presence.
How can I get hired as a electrical design engineer in Virginia with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new-graduate or associate engineer role at one of Virginia's large defense contractors or utilities, where structured onboarding programs exist specifically for candidates without professional experience. Leidos, Northrop Grumman, and Dominion Energy all run early-career engineering programs in Virginia that accept recent graduates. Internships completed during school at Virginia-based firms often convert to full-time offers. Candidates without a full engineering degree can enter through roles such as electrical CAD drafter or engineering technician and move into design positions as they build experience and, if applicable, work toward PE licensure.
Where can I find and apply to electrical design engineer jobs in Virginia?
You can find and apply to electrical design engineer jobs in Virginia on Migrate Mate, which lists current Virginia openings updated regularly. Search the listings, find roles that match your experience and target location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
