Electrical Systems Engineer Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical systems engineer in Montana?
You become an electrical systems engineer in Montana by earning a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, then pursuing licensure through the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors. The path requires passing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, accumulating supervised work experience, and then passing the Principles and Practice of Engineering exam. Licensure is required for work that affects public safety, and many Montana employers list a PE license or active pursuit of one as a hiring requirement.
How much do electrical systems engineers make in Montana?
Electrical systems engineers in Montana earn a median of about $87,360 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $72,910 for the lowest 10% to over $133,180 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical systems engineers in Montana?
Companies currently hiring electrical systems engineers in Montana include WSP, HDR, and Jobot, per current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's energy infrastructure build-out and federal contract work with agencies such as the Army Corps of Engineers and Malmstrom Air Force Base also generate recurring openings with contractors and utilities operating throughout the state.
Which Montana cities have the most electrical systems engineer jobs?
The Montana cities with the most electrical systems engineer openings are Billings, Missoula, and Bozeman. Billings anchors the market as Montana's largest city and a hub for energy companies and engineering contractors, while Great Falls benefits from the presence of Malmstrom Air Force Base and NorthWestern Energy operations, and Missoula draws openings tied to the University of Montana's research facilities and regional utility work.
Are there remote electrical systems engineer jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. Much of an electrical systems engineer's work involves on-site design review, equipment testing, and field inspections that cannot be done remotely. About 10% of electrical systems engineer openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, with the remote share concentrated in roles focused on modeling, simulation, and documentation rather than hands-on systems work.
How can I get hired as a electrical systems engineer in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying directly to utilities and engineering contractors that hire new graduates into junior engineer or engineer-in-training roles. NorthWestern Energy and state agencies such as the Montana Department of Transportation periodically bring on entry-level engineers under supervision toward PE licensure. Completing the Fundamentals of Engineering exam before graduating, building a capstone portfolio with power or control systems projects, and targeting adjacent roles such as electrical technician or systems analyst can all open the door to a first engineering position in Montana.
Where can I find and apply to electrical systems engineer jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to electrical systems engineer jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current Montana openings. Search the available roles, find the ones that match your experience and preferred location, and apply directly to the ones that fit.
