Electrical Design Technician Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a electrical design technician in Montana?
The most direct path in Montana is completing an associate degree in electrical engineering technology or a related program, available through institutions such as Montana Tech or Flathead Valley Community College. Electrical design technicians in Montana are not required to hold a state-issued electrician license, but working toward ETA certification through the Electronics Technicians Association or building a portfolio of CAD-drafted electrical projects strengthens your candidacy. Employers in the utility and engineering sectors expect familiarity with NEC standards before hiring.
How much do electrical design technicians make in Montana?
Electrical design technicians in Montana earn a median of about $82,050 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $38,210 for the lowest 10% to over $114,620 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire electrical design technicians in Montana?
Montana electrical design technician roles are posted by WSP, HDR, and Jobot and others right now, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's utility, mining, and civil engineering sectors are the most consistent sources of openings, with energy infrastructure projects driving demand across the state.
Which Montana cities have the most electrical design technician jobs?
Billings, Missoula, and Bozeman post the most electrical design technician openings in Montana. Billings anchors demand as the state's largest city and commercial hub, home to energy companies and engineering firms serving the Bakken region, while Great Falls and Missoula generate openings through municipal utilities, healthcare campus expansion, and regional engineering consultancies.
Are there remote electrical design technician jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're less common than in purely analytical roles because much of the work involves coordinating with on-site engineers and reviewing physical project conditions. About 9% of electrical design technician openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, which reflects the role's mix of desk-based drafting and site-dependent collaboration. The portions most suited to remote work are CAD drafting, documentation, and design review tasks.
How can I get hired as a electrical design technician in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is applying for a CAD drafter or design support role at a Montana engineering consultancy or utility, where you assist licensed engineers with documentation while building hands-on experience. Montana Tech and Flathead Valley Community College both produce graduates who land junior design roles at firms like Stahly Engineering and NorthWestern Energy through internship pipelines. Completing an AutoCAD Electrical certification and assembling a portfolio of sample schematics gives candidates without work experience a concrete edge over other applicants.
Where can I find and apply to electrical design technician jobs in Montana?
