Registered Nurse Jobs in Montana: Frequently Asked Questions
How do you become a registered nurse in Montana?
You become a registered nurse in Montana by completing an accredited nursing program, either an Associate Degree in Nursing or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, then passing the NCLEX-RN exam. After passing, you apply for licensure through the Montana Board of Nursing. Montana participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so nurses already licensed in another compact state can practice in Montana without obtaining a separate state license.
How much do registered nurses make in Montana?
Registered nurses in Montana earn a median of about $85,280 a year, based on May 2025 Bureau of Labor Statistics wage data, ranging from around $70,120 for the lowest 10% to over $113,920 for the top 10%. Pay rises with experience, specialty, and employer.
Which companies hire registered nurses in Montana?
Employers hiring registered nurses in Montana right now include Bozeman Health, Voyage Health, and Billings Clinic, based on current listings on Migrate Mate as of July 2026. Montana's largest health systems, including regional medical centers and critical access hospitals spread across the state, consistently represent the bulk of open positions throughout the year.
Which Montana cities have the most registered nurse jobs?
Billings, Bozeman, and Missoula have the most registered nurse openings in Montana. Billings leads as the state's largest city and home to its most prominent regional medical center, while Missoula and Great Falls support significant hospital and clinic infrastructure that generates consistent demand well beyond their population size.
Are there remote registered nurse jobs in Montana?
Yes, but they're rare. About 5% of registered nurse openings tied to Montana are remote or hybrid as of July 2026, reflecting the hands-on nature of most nursing roles. The positions most likely to offer remote or telehealth work are telephone triage nursing, care management, utilization review, and certain behavioral health case management roles.
How can I get hired as a registered nurse in Montana with little or no experience?
The most realistic entry path is a new graduate residency program offered by Montana's larger health systems such as Billings Clinic and Benefis Health System, which are designed specifically for nurses without clinical work history. Applying to medical-surgical or long-term care units at critical access hospitals across rural Montana is also a concrete option, as these facilities often hire new graduates that larger urban hospitals pass over. A Montana Board of Nursing license in hand before you apply, combined with any nursing assistant or patient care technician experience, meaningfully strengthens your application.
Where can I find and apply to registered nurse jobs in Montana?
You can find and apply to registered nurse jobs in Montana on Migrate Mate, which lists current openings tied to the state. Find roles that fit your specialty, experience level, and preferred location, then apply directly to each one.
